Inspiration

What inspired us to create this website was the stark reality of recent air quality issues. The unmistakable smell of smoke and pollution outdoors prompted us to take action. Our goal is to provide a website that tracks current AQI levels and offers tailored health recommendations to help people breathe easy and live healthier lives.

What it does

When you visit our website at Air Quality Health, you'll be greeted by a prominent Air Quality Index displayed front and center. This AQI serves as an immediate indicator of the current air quality in your area. Additionally, a bar graph visually pinpoints the pollutants responsible for the poor air quality. For a more personalized experience, we offer a textbox where you can input your pre-existing health conditions. Leveraging the power of the OpenAI API, our website will provide you with tailored recommendations on how to safeguard your well-being amidst varying air quality conditions.

How we built it

We started by fleshing out what we wanted the pages to look like. We sketched out ideas and picked the best one. Then, using HTML, Javascript, and CSS, we started implementing the designs into the actual webpage. We also use the OpenAI, weather and AQI apis to collect data. Weaving together front-end and back-end design, we successfully created the calculated AQI displayed on the webpage.

Challenges we ran into

One of the primary challenges our team encountered revolved around calculating the Air Quailty Index. This involved the meticulous process of determining average concentration values for various pollutants and applying the formula PV = nRT to derive the AQI.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were really happy when we finally were able to calculate the AQI (and remembering content from Chemistry class).

What we learned

We can use Render to deploy a react.js app. We also learned that besides people with pre-existing health conditions, anyone can be at risk from poor air quality.

What's next for Air Quality Health

In the future, we have exciting plans to enhance the Air Quality Health experience. Our vision includes integrating the website's real-time color changes with a companion lamp, designed for your nightstand. This innovative lamp will provide a visual indicator of outdoor air quality, ensuring you always know whether it's safe for you to step outside.
