Inspiration & Problem

Climate change is a collective pressing issue of planet earth. Lahore & Karachi two of our metro cities are in the list of world's top 10 air polluted cities including New Delhi, India in our neighborhood. As the population of Pakistan touches the mark of 250 million people and is expected to be the world's 4th most populous country by 2025, the requirement for generation of resources to meet the demands has increased rapidly. And to meet the demands of such a big population sustainable and sensible development approaches have been outlasted. The need of the hour is to create awareness among the people regarding the poisonous air they breathe in every day. Air quality information can help people avoid hazardous environment and take respective measures. The government has taken steps and set up nodes at different places, but air quality data is still not accessible by everyone and installing an air quality sensor at home is a costly affair. It's not an issue of one country; it's a global problem.

What it does

To address this issue, we developed an Inexpensive, Portable and Realtime Air Quality Analytics Application: Air Cognizer. Air Cognizer predicts the AQI from the images captured using a smartphone device. Air Cognizer is an Air Pollution Analytics Application. Just take a picture from your smartphone of the sky nearby you and it will tell you the quality of air around you.

How we built it

We built it harnessing the power of Microsoft's Cloud Azure. Two apps for two audiences. 1- Mobile Apps for consumers. 2- Web App for organizations like Meteorological national center Islamabad, Pakistan

Challenges we ran into

Collecting dataset of high-quality images of almost all parts of various cities was a huge challenge, we consulted with Pakistan Meteorological Department they helped us in data acquisition.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We emerged as the national finals of Microsoft Imagine Cup & won a local hackathon from Ministry of IT & Telcom, Pakistan.

What we learned

Cloud can reduce almost 10 times the time to market of a production grade application.

What's next for Air Cognizer

Launching it to the commercial market soon, because the next billionaires can be the entrepreneurs solving for climate change.
