Aion AI is an AI-powered biology tutor designed to help students visualize complex biomolecules, understand protein folding, and explore active sites interactively. Our goal is to make molecular biology tangible, engaging, and personalized for every learner.
Inspiration
During our studies, we realized that while AI tools exist for school and engineering students (like ChatGPT, Khan Academy, PW, MIT OpenCourse), medical students have very few accessible digital tools. Learning biology, especially molecular biology, requires visualization of proteins, DNA, and RNA, which is challenging with traditional textbooks.
We wanted to bridge this gap by creating a tool that not only explains concepts but also adapts to the way each student learns.
What We Learned
AI in Education: How AI can adaptively support a student’s learning style.
3D Visualization: Using AI to generate interactive 3D structures of proteins and highlight active sites.
User-Centric Design: Building a system that is intuitive, fun, and easy to navigate.
Data Handling: Managing student interactions safely and using them to personalize guidance.
How We Built It
Input Module: Students upload reports, protein, DNA, or RNA sequences.
Visualization Engine: AI generates 3D molecular structures, highlights foldings and active sites.
Adaptive Learning: The system tracks how students explore topics, identifies hesitations or mistakes, and provides tailored explanations, analogies, and mini-quizzes.
Knowledge Growth: Each interaction helps the AI improve its guidance over time.
Challenges Faced
Complex 3D Visualizations: Generating accurate protein models for beginners.
Personalization: Making the AI truly adaptive without overwhelming the student.
Resource Integration: Combining textbook knowledge, videos, and AI responses into a seamless platform.
Despite these challenges, we developed a system that makes biology fun, interactive, and memorable.
Conclusion
Aion AI is more than just a study tool—it empowers students to learn their way, making molecular biology accessible, engaging, and personalized. By solving visualization and learning challenges, we hope to redefine how biology is taught and learned.
