Inspiration

Commercial contracts are essential for businesses, but obtaining legal support can often be expensive and time-consuming, particularly for startups, small businesses, freelancers and consultants. At the same time, more businesses are turning to general-purpose AI tools to review and draft important contracts, often without appropriate legal safeguards or professional oversight.

This inspired us to create AIgent Legal: an AI-powered platform that combines the speed and accessibility of AI with content and oversight provided by experienced legal professionals. We recognise that businesses are increasingly likely to use AI when dealing with contracts, so we wanted to create a more responsible and reliable way for them to do so. Our aim is not to replace lawyers but to make everyday commercial legal support more accessible while retaining a human in the loop where professional review is appropriate.

What it does

AIgent Legal helps users review existing commercial contracts and generate new ones. A user can upload a contract to receive an AI-assisted analysis identifying higher-risk red flags and issues that may require clarification or negotiation.

Users who need a new contract can describe their requirements and complete a dynamic question-and-answer process. The platform adapts its questions to the information provided and uses the responses to prepare tailored commercial terms alongside lawyer-drafted general provisions. Users can then review, edit, store, share and export their contracts and obtain professional legal support before finalising them where required.

How we built it

The code for AIgent Legal has been written by our tech partner Shamsudeen Adedokun (Shams), a full stack developer who is a key member of the team and a signatory to the partnership agreement for the project. The platform was trained using real contractuals that our experienced legal professionals have worked on and/or reviewed over the years. The platform was designed so that AI can undertake the time-consuming initial review and drafting process while the user remains responsible for the commercial decisions. A legal professional as the 'human-in-the-loop' can then provide human review where this is appropriate or required.

Challenges we ran into

One of our main challenges was balancing speed and accessibility with the accuracy, confidentiality and care required when handling legal documents. Commercial contracts are highly contextual, so the platform needs to identify relevant issues without suggesting that automated output can replace legal advice tailored to an individual user’s circumstances. We also needed to make the platform straightforward for people who may not understand legal terminology while still gathering enough information to produce a useful and relevant contract. Protecting confidential information and clearly distinguishing AI assistance from formal legal advice were therefore central considerations throughout the development process. From a development perspective, one of our key concerns was ensuring that the 'human-in-the-loop' consultation element of the flow aligned with necessary client onboarding requirements to ensure that there is a formal relationship in place for any lawyer-led advice. This required close alignment between the tech lead and myself as the legal product lead in finalising the appropriate UX flows.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have been able to integrate the use of the AIgent Legal platform into our own legal business to streamline the support that we ourselves provide to our clients and are now ready to allow other users to also achieve the same efficiencies. We have combined AI technology with genuine legal expertise to create a practical platform for everyday commercial contracting. We have developed a contract-generation process that responds to each user’s circumstances and a review process that distinguishes between significant risks and matters that may require further clarification.

We are particularly proud that responsible use of AI has been built into the platform’s design. Rather than presenting AI as a replacement for lawyers, AIgent Legal creates a clear route to human legal support when a contract requires professional review.

What we learned

We learned that responsible legal AI requires much more than connecting a language model to a document. It requires carefully designed workflows, legally reviewed content, clear limitations, strong data protection and appropriate human oversight.

We also learned that users benefit most when AI translates complicated legal issues into clear and practical information rather than simply producing more legal language. This has influenced the way we designed the platform’s contract review, dynamic questions and future features.

What's next for Aigent Legal

Our immediate priorities are to launch and to continue developing AIgent Legal, onboard users and use their feedback to improve the platform. We plan to expand the range of commercial agreements it supports and introduce features including plain-English clause explanations, collaborative editing, version control and reminders for renewal, expiry and renegotiation dates.

Our long-term goal is to give small businesses greater confidence when dealing with everyday commercial contracts while providing a faster and more efficient route to professional legal support.
