🙋♀️ Inspiration
When our team sat down to brainstorm, one topic that stood out to us the most was finances, particularly the financial challenges faced by students. With two of our members being the children of immigrants and the other two being international students, we understand that the topic of finances can be quite difficult. From there, feeling like there is so much information out there, to not enough on the very specific issue you're having, Aidly aims to make it easier by giving you news and information specifically targeted to a student based on things like their major, career path, and university.
🤷♀️ What it does
The main goal of Aidly is to help inform user based on their current situation. Through things like your major, career path, university, and, if a university partners with us, their financial standings, an AI algorithm will curate a feed of information that is best for them. On top of this, any article they view or like will add to their personal algorithm to ensure they are always getting information that is the best for them in the given moment.
👩💻 How we built it
Our Front-end designers used Figma first to create an idea of how the different screens would flow. From there, they set up the layout and designed the interface of the app. Our Back-end developers then used that with a mix of Figma Make to create a version in Replit.
🙎♀️ Challenges we ran into
- Wi-Fi issues: For a good part of the beginning of the hackathon, three of our members were having trouble with the Wi-Fi connection, pushing us back a little. We didn’t let this slow us down, though, using the time away from our devices to brainstorm and fully get a grasp on the concepts and themes we wanted to convey through our project.
- Front-end vs Back-end: There were many design ideas our front-end developers wanted to implement, but due to time, our back-end developers would not have been able to. Through communication, though, we were able to find compromises that all parties were satisfied with.
👸 Accomplishments that we're proud of
This was the biggest project anyone in our team has done, so just being able to pull it off and end with a project that we all know we would love to have is something we are proud of.
👩💼 What's next for Aidly
Since a big part of Aidly’s algorithm runs on knowing your university, the clear next step would be to partner with them. By doing this, the door for new features will open up, including, but not limited to:
- University Announcement System: Universities would be able to send major announcements regarding finances directly to a student's home screen (i.e., when tuition is due or what big scholarships are coming up)
- Community Hubs: Forums could be implemented where students can ask questions to each other. On a similar note, groups of students with similar situations (i.e, major, career, financial background) could be formed by the university to continue to encourage a sense of growth together.
