Inspiration

We were inspired to create AIDA (Automated Interior Design App) by the growing need for people to have comfortable and visually appealing living spaces, especially with the rise of remote work due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We realized that many people struggle with knowing how to design their space, where to get started, and how to find the right pieces of furniture without the need for an expensive interior designer.

What it does

AIDA is a digital interior designer that helps end-to-end in designing your space. It is smart tool that provides users with personalized interior design recommendations based on their budget, room dimensions, and preferred design styles. The app offers users multiple design options, including furniture recommendations, color schemes, and layout suggestions, and provides a visualization of their space. Users can purchase the recommended furniture directly from the app to help further streamline the process.

How we built it

We built AIDA using a combination of the Wix Velo platform and web development technologies. The app is powered by SQL which analyzes user preferences and makes personalized design recommendations based on style; layouts are created and furniture suggestions are provided. We used editorX for both the front-end and back-end development. We also integrated our project with Github to support local development environments. We used inbuilt wix data features to create various collections with furniture, styles, and layouts, and links to online furniture retailers to allow users to purchase furniture directly from the app.

Challenges we ran into

One of the major challenges we faced was learning how to use the wix data API and building our own custom collections that would filter user preferences and make suggestions. We had to go through a lot of iterations and read a lot of documentation to be able to get it right. We also had to overcome technical challenges with integrating the app with multiple collections and update user preferences. Finally, we had to ensure that we were designing a User experience in the app that is intuitive and simple for people with varying levels of technical expertise.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating a tool that empowers people to design their own living spaces, without the need for an expensive interior designer. We are also proud of building our custom collections of data that can make personalized design recommendations based on user preferences and constraints. Finally, we are proud of having been able to collaborate so efficiently as a team even when working in different time zones, having day jobs, and being the first time we have met and worked together.

What we learned

Through the development of AIDA, we learned a lot about how the Velo platform works, we learned how to use EditorX, to integrate our project with github and also integrate with google cloud console to monitor traffic on the site. We also learned how to use apps from the marketplace like KPIBees that we connected to a google sheet and to our project to collect data from our project.

What's next for AIDA

In the future, we plan to expand AIDA's capabilities to include more advanced design recommendations, such as varying room sizes, more furniture types. We intend to make this powered by genAI and give users an experience in VR where they can feel like they're physically in the space as they're making design choices. We also plan to integrate with more online furniture retailers and expand the app's reach to a wider audience. Additionally, we plan to enhance the app's ability to make recommendations by leveraging machine learning to provide even more personalized and accurate recommendations to users.
