About the Project
💡 Inspiration
I was inspired to build this project because understanding symptoms and possible diseases can be confusing, especially when there are many symptoms that overlap between different conditions. I wanted to explore how artificial intelligence could make this process easier by creating a tool that analyzes symptoms and provides an understandable prediction.
My goal was not to replace doctors, but to demonstrate how AI and machine learning could be used to support healthcare and help people better understand health information.
🛠️ How I Built It
I built an AI Medical Assistant using a large healthcare dataset containing diseases and hundreds of possible symptoms. I first cleaned and prepared the data, converted the symptoms into a format that machine-learning models could understand, and trained classification models to predict the most likely disease based on the symptoms provided.
I then built an interactive interface where users can enter or select their symptoms. The system processes the information and uses the trained AI model to generate a prediction. I also focused on making the results easier to understand rather than simply displaying a disease name.
The project combines Python, machine learning, data processing, and Gradio to create the final application.
📚 What I Learned
This project taught me a lot about working with real-world datasets. I learned how important data cleaning and preprocessing are, especially when working with hundreds of symptoms and many different disease categories.
I also learned how to compare different machine-learning models, evaluate their performance using metrics such as accuracy and F1-score, and improve a model when its initial results were not good enough.
Beyond machine learning, I learned how to turn a trained model into an actual application that people can interact with.
🚧 Challenges
One of the biggest challenges was the complexity of the dataset. There were a large number of symptoms and disease classes, which made prediction difficult and caused some models to perform poorly at first.
I experimented with different models and approaches to improve the results. I also had to solve technical problems involving memory usage, model training, data preprocessing, and connecting the machine-learning model to the user interface.
These challenges taught me that building an AI project is not just about training a model—it is also about understanding the data, testing different approaches, solving problems, and turning the final model into something useful.
🚀 The Result
The final result is an interactive AI Medical Assistant that takes symptoms as input and uses machine learning to predict possible diseases. The project demonstrates how AI can be applied to healthcare while emphasizing that its predictions are for educational and informational purposes, not a replacement for professional medical advice.
Through this project, I was able to combine my interests in AI, machine learning, programming, and healthcare into one practical application.
