Inspiration
We got the idea for this project by thinking about the everyday challenges faced by visually impaired people. Simple activities like reading a sign, identifying an object, or understanding what is around them can sometimes require help from others. We wanted to create a solution that could help them become more independent using AI.
About the Project
Our project, AI Vision Assistant for the Visually Impaired, is an AI-based assistant that helps visually impaired users understand their surroundings. It uses a camera to capture the scene and AI to identify objects, read text, and describe what is happening around the user.
The information is then converted into speech, so the user can hear the result instead of depending on a screen. For example, the assistant can read a signboard, identify an object, or describe a scene and provide the information through voice.
How We Built It
We combined computer vision, OCR, AI, and text-to-speech technologies to build the system. The camera acts as the input, and the captured image is processed by the AI model. OCR is used when the user needs to read text from documents, signs, or labels. The final information is converted into voice output using text-to-speech.
The basic workflow is:
Camera → Image Processing → AI/OCR → Understanding → Voice Output
Challenges We Faced
One of the main challenges was making the system work properly with different types of images and lighting conditions. Sometimes text may be unclear or objects may be partially hidden. We also had to make sure that the response was simple and useful instead of giving too much unnecessary information.
Another challenge was reducing the time taken to process an image and give the voice response.
What We Learned
While working on this project, we learned how AI and computer vision can be used to solve real-life problems. We gained practical experience with object detection, OCR, AI-based image understanding, and text-to-speech.
More importantly, we understood that technology should be easy to use and should actually make people's daily lives easier.
Future Scope
In the future, we would like to add real-time obstacle detection, navigation assistance, multi-language voice support, emergency alerts, and wearable device integration. We also plan to improve the system so that it can work faster and more reliably in real-world situations.
