Inspiration

On vacation, browsing reddit... seeing dreamstudio being launched (2021) with stable diffusion. Playing around with it and accidentally creating a tattoo. That's where my idea was born. Because I wanted a tattoo since years, a very specific one. Remembering my parents. I wanted to have control, not give up control to an artist. But that's hard when one is not an artist. Now, finally, I seemed to have control.

What it does

The tattoo hub is everything for tattoos.

  • Create your Tattoos (of course, but everyone can do that). It's a nice interface. But essentially just a prompt library with quality of live features. But also:
    • image to tattoo (upload e.g. your dog -> tattoo)
    • tattoo style change (e.g. geometric -> watercolor)
    • doodle 2 tattoo (draw anything -> tattoo)
  • Try On Tattoo: This is the feature that is used most. Take a photo, on-device analysis and then try on every tattoo in real time. You see a tattoo on instagram? Share it with ai tattoos, and have a fast preview (yes, even real tattoos on skin - our models isolate the tattoos - a make transparent on steroids)
  • Tattoo Community Sharing (Browse community created tattoos)
  • Curated Tattoo Browsing (By AI Tattoos creators)
  • Tattoo Style Check (Tinder like tattoo swiping until your style is found)
  • Tattoo Artist Finder (Google Maps like feature, but filter your tattoo artist by e.g. style - All of europe and united states indexed)

How I built it

  1. Flutter Frontend
  2. Firebase authentication
  3. Java Serverless functions in google cloud (wow that works really well)
  4. Terraform (for IaC)
  5. Lot's of small tooling around it, e.g. python projects for rapid ai model iteration / training
  6. CLion for native c++ code
  7. Fastlane for automation

Challenges I ran into

Tattoo artists are against AI - I understand that. The app though is not working against tattoo artists. It never was. It never will be. The tattoos the app designs are just brainstorming, browsing like on pinterest or instagram. To get a feeling "what do I want". And with that feeling you find a matching tattoo artist. And his own style, own imagination makes your dream come true.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

The app just works since 2021. The features are competition destroyers. There are so many tattoo apps. They come and go. Just a few that stay alive.

What I learned

Marketing is the only thing that killed me.
