AI StudyMate: Learning Twin + Misconception Detective

1. Inspiration 💡 We were inspired by the challenges students face when learning complex concepts from textbooks, lecture slides, and videos. Every student learns differently, and traditional study methods may not identify individual learning gaps. We wanted to build a smart study companion that helps students understand concepts, recognize misconceptions, and learn at their own pace.

2. What it does 🚀 AI StudyMate is a personalized learning companion that helps students study more effectively. Its key features include: AI Tutor: Ask questions about study materials and receive explanations. Source-Cited Answers: View supporting sources and page references when available. Adaptive Quizzes: Test knowledge and practice important concepts. Misconception Detective: Help identify possible misunderstandings. Cognitive Learning Twin: Support personalized learning based on student progress. Study Planner and Timer: Organize study sessions. Learning Analytics: Review progress and identify topics that need more attention. The goal is to make studying more interactive, personalized, and effective.

3. How we built it 🛠️ We built AI StudyMate as a web application with a React-based frontend and a Node.js and Express backend. We used TypeScript for application logic and SQLite for local data persistence. The application processes supported study materials and uses retrieval methods to find relevant information for answering questions. It also includes features for quizzes, personalized learning, and tracking study progress. We designed the application with a modular structure so that its components can be improved independently. AI service integrations and fallback retrieval methods help support the question-answering experience.

4. Challenges we ran into 🧩 One of our biggest challenges was integrating different components of the application, including the frontend, backend, document processing, database, and AI-powered question answering. We also faced challenges in retrieving relevant information from study materials and presenting answers with useful source citations. Configuring dependencies, handling external AI service requirements, and testing the complete application required additional effort. We addressed these challenges by debugging the application, improving retrieval logic, and testing the available functionality.

5. Accomplishments that we're proud of 🏆

We are proud of building AI StudyMate into a working web application that brings several learning tools together in one place. Our accomplishments include: Building a web interface for a personalized study companion. Supporting the processing of multiple study material formats. Developing question answering with source references. Integrating retrieval methods for finding relevant study content. Creating a foundation for quizzes, misconception detection, and personalized learning. Organizing the application into frontend, backend, and database components. We are especially proud of turning our idea into a project that demonstrates how AI can support more personalized learning.
