Inspiration

Modern agile teams rely heavily on Jira, yet sprint risks often surface too late—after delays have already occurred or developers are already overloaded. While Jira provides raw data, teams still need to manually interpret sprint health, workload distribution, and potential delivery risks.

The inspiration behind AI Sprint Health Checker came from observing teams struggle to answer simple but critical questions:

  • Is this sprint at risk?
  • Are some developers overloaded?
  • Will we miss our sprint goals?

We wanted to turn sprint data into clear, actionable insights—automatically.

What it does

AI Sprint Health Checker is an Jira app that continuously analyzes sprint data to help teams stay ahead of problems.

The app:

  • Analyzes sprint tasks, statuses, assignees, and due dates
  • Detects sprint risks such as delays and bottlenecks ⚠️
  • Identifies overloaded developers 👤
  • Predicts potential delivery delays 🕒
  • Presents insights through a simple, easy-to-understand dashboard with alerts

Instead of digging through multiple Jira views, teams get an instant snapshot of sprint health.

How we built it

The project was built using Atlassian Forge with a Custom UI approach to provide flexibility and a modern user experience.

Tech stack & approach:

  • Atlassian Forge (Custom UI)
  • Jira Software REST APIs for sprint and issue data
  • Lightweight sprint health rules analysis
  • A clean dashboard focused on clarity rather than complexity

The app fetches real-time sprint data from Jira, applies health indicators and heuristics, and enhances the results with AI-driven analysis.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges was balancing simplicity and usefulness. Jira data can be complex, and over-analyzing it can overwhelm users. We focused on identifying the most impactful signals—workload imbalance, overdue tasks, and stalled issues—without overengineering the solution.

Another challenge was designing AI prompts that produce actionable insights, not just summaries. We refined prompts to ensure the output highlights risks and suggests practical next steps.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully built a working Jira app using Atlassian Forge (Custom UI) within a limited timeframe.
  • Integrated Jira Software REST APIs to fetch real-time sprint, board, and issue data.
  • Designed a clear and intuitive sprint health dashboard that surfaces risks at a glance.
  • Implemented AI-driven analysis to translate complex sprint data into actionable insights.
  • Identified key sprint risk indicators such as developer overload, overdue tasks, and workflow bottlenecks.
  • Balanced automation with simplicity by focusing on the most impactful sprint health signals.
  • Delivered a functional prototype that solves a real-world problem faced by agile teams.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned:

  • How to effectively use Atlassian Forge to build scalable Jira apps
  • How AI can enhance agile workflows without replacing human judgment
  • The importance of presenting insights clearly for fast decision-making
  • How small, focused features can deliver significant value to teams

What's next for AI Sprint Health Checker

Future improvements could include:

  • Historical sprint trend analysis
  • Custom health thresholds per team
  • Team-level and project-level comparisons
  • Marketplace-ready features for broader adoption

AI Sprint Health Checker aims to help teams act early, work smarter, and deliver with confidence.
