Inspiration Developer fatigue caused by repeating context, operational constraints, and architectural rules across multiple AI coding tools (Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot, Windsurf) and fresh chat sessions. What it does AI Rule Learning operates as a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that:
- Monitors real-time AI-developer interaction streams.
- Automatically identifies friction points, anti-patterns, and repeated manual corrections.
- Synthesizes and persists workspace memory, custom skills, and guardrail rules across sessions.
- Inject relevant constraints dynamically into supporting environments (Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Copilot) with zero manual prompt editing or static configuration. How we built it
- Core Protocol: Implemented via Model Context Protocol (MCP) to standardize context delivery and tool integration.
- Analysis Engine: Background parsing layer evaluating interaction diffs to extract explicit and implicit user constraints.
- Storage & Retrieval: Local persistent state engine indexing rules, memory, and project-level context for instant low-latency lookup.
- Integration Layer: Multi-target adapters converting synthesized rules into IDE-native rule structures (.cursorrules, system prompts, instructions files). Challenges we ran into
- Rule Bloat & Pruning: Preventing transient corrections from becoming permanent, conflicting system constraints.
- Token Budget Optimization: Balancing rule density against context window consumption to preserve target LLM context capacity.
- Cross-Environment Schema Translation: Standardizing rule execution across engines with varying systemic prompt capabilities and formats. Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Fully automated, zero-configuration background rule generation loop.
- Interoperable persistence layer allowing seamless state handoff between different AI assistants.
- Low runtime latency overhead on live conversation streaming. What we learned
- Fine-tuning semantic heuristics to distinguish high-value long-term constraints from situational prompt tweaks.
- Strategies for active memory lifecycle management, decay, and automated rule consolidation inside long-running project environments. What's next for AI Rule Learning
- Multi-developer repository syncing for shared team guardrails.
- AST-aware contextual filtering (triggering specific rules based on active code files or imports).
- Conflict detection engine for identifying and merging contradictory user-defined rules.
