Inspiration
Ever since I was little, I have always dabbled in literature, whether it was reading a new book or actually creating one. I remember opening a fresh document, excited to write, but I would face writer's block just hours later. On the other hand, I love to read. Every weekend, I curl up with a nice book and just read into the night, no matter what time it is. However, sometimes I have trouble finding a book that's just right for me. That's where I got the idea for AI-Publisher, to take care of both sides. It allows me to create books without stressing to make every detail perfect, but also creates an interesting book that I can read and enjoy.
What it does
AI-Publisher collects data from the user and turns that into a fully fledged rough draft for a book. It asks the user for the main character's name, age, personality, and then the setting and plot of the story. From there, it develops a blueprint so the user knows what is expected of the book. The user can then approve this, edit it, or generate a completely new blueprint. From there, the AI generates chapter by chapter, allowing the user to approve each one. Once every chapter is approved, the AI will actually grade each chapter, and the user can ask the AI to fix key components, such as dialogue. From there, the AI will generate various covers, and the user can pick one that best suits the book. Once this is all done, it can actually be exported and ready for review by an actual editor.
How we built it
This website was built entirely with Cursor; for the AI, we used Groq, and then Supabase for the SQL editor and to handle the login information.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was working with the API key on the free version of Groq, so what I planned to do was have cursor add a soft limit for every user, which is displayed at the top of their screen and the admin also has a kill switch in case of an error with the API key.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am happy that the AI generation for the cover art works and is integrated into the export system.
What we learned
I learned that sometimes I need to be patient, as in the opening phases the AI would take a long time to respond and I would get worried, but I realized that worrying would not actually solve the problem, so I would go back and look with Cursor on ways to fix it.
What's next for AI-Publisher
I want to have real publishers and authors test out my website and give me feedback on how to make it better. I also want to add a section within the website that takes care of PR and uses AI to create things like Instagram posts and promotional videos.
