Inspiration Bangalore faces a critical waste management crisis with over 6,000 tonnes of waste generated daily but only 60% collected and 15% treated. Growing urbanization, inconsistent collection schedules, overflowing bins, and limited processing facilities motivated us to develop an innovative, AI-driven solution to transform the city’s waste infrastructure sustainably.

What it does Our project integrates IoT-enabled smart bins with real-time fill monitoring, AI-powered route optimization to improve collection efficiency, computer vision-based waste sorting for higher recycling accuracy, and a citizen engagement platform to foster community participation. This system aims to increase collection rates to 95%, boost treatment efficiency to 85%, reduce operational costs, and minimize environmental footprint.

How we built it The solution was developed as an interactive web application using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript with Chart.js for dynamic data visualization. We simulated real-time bin monitoring data, optimized routing maps, and sorting accuracy dashboards. The UI is responsive and designed for easy navigation and professional presentation.

Challenges we ran into Capturing the complexity of real-world waste management data in a simplified, interactive demo was challenging. Simulating real-time dynamic data, integrating multiple AI components conceptually, and designing an intuitive UI while keeping the application lightweight were key hurdles. Additionally, creating compelling visualizations that clearly communicate impact required careful planning.

Accomplishments that we're proud of We successfully developed a comprehensive, user-friendly demo that captures the full scope of a smart waste management system. The project clearly demonstrates AI’s potential in public infrastructure, integrating multiple advanced technologies in a cohesive, accessible format. Our predictive analytics and citizen engagement features stand out as practical, innovative solutions.

What we learned This project deepened our understanding of urban waste challenges and how AI technologies can be applied to social and environmental issues. We enhanced skills in data simulation, interactive dashboard design, and integrating diverse technical components into a focused narrative. It also sharpened our ability to communicate technical solutions for hackathon and public audiences.

What's next for AI-Powered Smart Waste Management for Bangalore Next steps include developing a fully functional backend to connect real sensors and live data feeds, expanding route optimization with live traffic integration, and building a mobile app for greater citizen interaction. We also plan to pilot the system in select Bangalore wards in partnership with local authorities and scale the solution to other cities facing similar challenges.
