Inspiration
We wanted to bridge the gap between the golden era of 8-bit/16-bit gaming and modern generative AI. There is a specific "soul" in retro MIDI and synth-wave tracks that often feels lost in modern high-fidelity production. Our goal was to create a tool that allows anyone to generate authentic-sounding retro loops for games or personal projects with just a text prompt
What it does
The application takes user inputs (like "upbeat forest level" or "dark boss battle") and generates a unique MIDI or chiptune audio file. It doesn't just "find" a song; it composes a new one based on the mathematical patterns found in classic retro soundtracks.
How we built it
We utilized a combination of Python and TensorFlow/PyTorch to train a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) on a dataset of classic MIDI files. Backend: FastAPI to handle the generation requests. Frontend: React, styled with a "pixel-art" CSS framework to match the retro vibe. Audio Engine: We used a synthesizer library to convert MIDI data into high-quality .wav files using classic sound fonts (like the NES or Sega Genesis sound chips)
Challenges we ran into
One major hurdle was "rhythmic drift"—where the AI would lose the steady 4/4 beat common in retro music. We solved this by implementing a Loss Function that penalizes off-beat notes
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Achieving a generation time of under 10 seconds. Successfully implementing a "Style Transfer" feature where you can upload a melody and have it "retro-fied." Creating a UI that feels like an old-school arcade cabinet.
What we learned We learned a massive amount about digital signal processing (DSP) and how to represent music as numerical data. We also realized that "perfect" AI music often sounds boring; adding slight "human" imperfections is what makes it feel nostalgic.
What's next for AI POWERED RETRO MUSIC GENERATOR
We plan to add a VST Plugin version so music producers can use our engine directly inside their Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs). We also want to expand the training set to include 90s era Lo-Fi and Chillhop.
