AI - Powered Multilingual Learning System

Inspiration

The inspiration to work on this challenge came from a personal experience. I witnessed a massive change in the education system when I moved from my home country to pursue higher education. Although, with time I was able to move forward with these changes and accept the system, one factor that always resisted my learning process was the language, dialect and accent used while teaching. While I struggled a lot to cover my concepts, I felt the need for us to have a learning system that is capable of teaching the same concept by the same instructor by adapting to a language known to us. Such a system would aid the students or learners to grasp complex concepts easily without the additional challenges of language barriers.

What it does

The project currently focuses on the lectures being recorded and uploaded by the instructor on online learning platforms. The proposed system employs the power of Artificial Intelligence to take these recordings as an input and extract some key features which make up the video such as instructor's face (if present), the displayed content, as well as the audio which covers the tone, style and personality of the speaker. The AI model being involved is responsible to train itself by learning through these inputs and convert them to any desired target language using key concepts such as Deep Learning, Neural Networks, Natural Language Processing, Optical Character Recognition, and so on. The output is expected to consist of a final translated version of the lecture where the instructor is replaced by it's AI replica, their facial expressions and lip movements are synced with the converted voice, and the contents being displayed on the slides or board during the video duration is also converted to the desired and familiar language making it more understandable and accessible to students on a global scale.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was to identify the drawbacks of the current education system and to devise a solution that is void of any loopholes. Although this challenge was focusses on innovative ideas, it was also important to ensure that the proposed idea can be achieved in a realistic sense by realizing the existing technologies and capabilities of Artificial Intelligence.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Through the creation of such a multilingual learning system, I am proud of the fact that no one will be facing difficulties in learning due to the medium of instruction. The instructor's on the other hand will have a fair chance to showcase and express their valuable knowledge at a global level instead of being restricted by regional linguistics and will have larger audience. Overall, I am satisfied with my work as it fulfills the requirement of equal education rights in true sense.

What's next for AI - Powered Multilingual Learning System

The solution also holds a future potential to extend beyond recorded lectures and perform similar tasks in real-time during live sessions. By using advanced AI technologies, it could translate the instructor’s speech, synchronize their facial expressions and lip movements, and translate any on-screen content instantly, allowing students to engage in live classes without language barriers. This capability would enhance the learning experience for students from diverse linguistic backgrounds, providing a more immersive and accessible education in real-time.
