Inspiration

Landslides can happen suddenly and cause serious damage to lives, homes, roads, and infrastructure. We wanted to build a system that could identify early warning signs instead of only reacting after a landslide occurs. This inspired us to combine IoT sensors with AI-based risk prediction to create a practical early-warning solution.

What We Built

We developed SlopeGuard AI, an IoT and AI-powered landslide early warning system. The system continuously monitors environmental and ground conditions using sensors such as:

🌱 Soil moisture sensor 🌧️ Rainfall sensor 📐 Tilt sensor 🔌 ESP32 microcontroller

The collected sensor readings are transmitted for analysis. By combining multiple parameters rather than relying on a single sensor, the system can identify abnormal conditions that may indicate an increased landslide risk.

The processed information can be visualized through a dashboard, while alerts can be generated when the risk reaches a critical level.

How We Built It

The project follows a simple pipeline:

Sensors → ESP32 → IoT Communication → AI/ML Analysis → Risk Level → Alert/Dashboard

The ESP32 collects real-time readings from the connected sensors. These readings are processed and analyzed using an AI/ML approach to estimate the level of risk. The results are then presented in an easy-to-understand format so that users can respond quickly.

Biggest Challenge

One of our biggest challenges was dealing with changing environmental conditions and sensor readings. A single sensor value cannot always indicate a landslide, since rainfall, soil moisture, and ground movement can naturally fluctuate.

We addressed this by considering multiple sensor parameters together, which helps the system make more meaningful predictions and reduce unnecessary alerts.

What We Learned

Building this project helped us understand how AI and IoT can work together in a real-world application. We learned about sensor integration, real-time data collection, data processing, AI-based prediction, and designing systems where reliability is critical.

More importantly, we learned that a successful AI solution is not only about the model—it also depends on quality data, reliable hardware, meaningful features, and an effective alert mechanism.

Future Scope

We plan to improve SlopeGuard AI by collecting larger real-world datasets, improving the prediction model, adding more environmental parameters, and integrating communication channels such as SMS, WhatsApp, or mobile notifications.

Our goal is to turn the prototype into a scalable early-warning platform that can support communities and authorities in landslide-prone regions.

Sense the risk. Predict the danger. Save lives.
