Inspiration
The inspiration behind SmartBus AI came from the real-life problem of overcrowded college buses. Many students are forced to stand during travel, especially when a bus driver is absent or buses are unevenly loaded. We observed that some buses become overcrowded while other nearby buses still have empty seats. This inspired us to build an intelligent AI-based transport management system that can monitor occupancy in real time and redistribute students efficiently.
What it does
SmartBus AI is an AI-powered college transport management system that uses CCTV-based occupancy detection, live bus tracking, and AI analytics to monitor student crowd levels inside buses. The system detects overcrowded buses, identifies nearby buses with available seats, and suggests intelligent student redistribution at common crossing points. It also provides live dashboards, emergency alerts, driver communication, route management, and predictive analytics for smarter transport operations.
How we built it
We designed the project as a modern full-stack web application using:
- Next.js and React for frontend
- Tailwind CSS for UI design
- Node.js and Express for backend
- Real-time analytics dashboards
- AI-based CCTV occupancy simulation
- Google Maps integration for live tracking
- Socket.io for real-time updates
The system architecture was planned to be scalable, responsive, and production-ready.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was designing an efficient redistribution logic for buses crossing the same route points. Another challenge was simulating real-time CCTV occupancy detection and handling live transport data visualization. Managing route optimization and ensuring a clean, responsive UI for large-scale transport monitoring was also challenging.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of building an innovative real-world solution that solves an actual transportation problem faced by students daily. We successfully designed a futuristic AI-powered dashboard, real-time occupancy monitoring system, intelligent redistribution concept, and scalable transport management architecture. The project combines AI, real-time systems, and smart transportation into one platform.
What we learned
Through this project, we learned about AI-powered analytics, real-time data handling, smart transportation systems, dashboard design, route optimization, and scalable web application architecture. We also improved our problem-solving, UI/UX design, and system-planning skills.
