Inspiration

Modern digital financial ecosystems process millions of transactions daily, making rapid anomaly detection critical for preventing fraud and managing spending risks. I wanted to build an accessible, intelligent dashboard that simplifies financial analytics, automatically flags unusual spending patterns using statistical AI models, and provides a seamless developer-friendly environment for testing live payment integrations.

What it does

AI Payment Insights Assistant is an end-to-end financial monitoring web application built with Streamlit. It provides:

  • Interactive Financial Analytics: Aggregates overall payment volumes, total transaction values, and category-wise spending breakdowns.
  • AI-Assisted Anomaly Detection: Runs statistical and machine learning models on transaction datasets to automatically detect and flag outliers (e.g., payments exceeding $5\times$ or $2\times$ the median spend) in a dedicated review queue.
  • PayPal Sandbox Integration: Provides a sandbox interface to securely simulate and test online payment processing.
  • Data Exporting: Allows reviewers to export flagged records to CSV for offline audit workflows.

How we built it

  • Frontend & UI: Streamlit for building an intuitive, responsive web application.
  • Data Processing & Analytics: Python, Pandas, and NumPy for computing running medians, aggregated totals, and category metrics.
  • Machine Learning & Modeling: Statistical outlier evaluation and anomaly scoring rules to flag suspicious transactions.
  • Environment & Tools: Developed using VS Code and virtual environment isolated toolchains (.venv).

Challenges we faced

  • Dependency Compatibility: Resolving environment configuration issues between modern Python package versions (such as aligning NumPy and Pandas requirements) while ensuring smooth Streamlit execution.
  • Statistical Model Calibration: Balancing threshold rules in the review queue to ensure legitimate large transactions are flagged appropriately without causing false-positive noise.

What we learned

  • Best practices for structuring modular Streamlit web apps and managing virtual environment package installations efficiently.
  • Designing practical human-in-the-loop review queues for AI-assisted financial risk monitoring.

What's next for AI Payment Insights Assistant

  • Integrating advanced ML models like Isolation Forests for multi-feature fraud scoring.
  • Adding persistent database storage (SQLite / PostgreSQL) to save reviewer actions ("Approve" / "Flag").
  • Expanding real-time webhooks for live payment gateway monitoring.
