🔍 About the Project

Our project is a web application that analyzes the composition of a dish using AI-powered image recognition, based on a photo of the dish itself or a menu page. The app identifies key ingredients, estimates potential allergens, and provides nutritional information and background details. This solution is especially useful for travelers, people with dietary restrictions, and anyone curious about what they’re eating.

The project was developed during a hackathon by two developers using AI Bolt.new, which streamlined our development process and allowed us to build the platform efficiently and without any technical issues. The result is a clean, intuitive application that brings food transparency and curiosity to the forefront of everyday dining.

💡 What Inspired Us

We were inspired by a common real-world challenge: you’re sitting in a restaurant, reading a menu in a foreign language, or facing a beautifully plated dish — but you don’t really know what it contains. This is more than an inconvenience for people with allergies, health conditions, or strict diets — it can be a serious risk. On the other hand, for food enthusiasts, it’s also a missed opportunity to learn more about global cuisine and expand their culinary knowledge.

We imagined a tool that could break down a dish’s composition using just an image — whether from a physical menu, a restaurant plate, or a social media post — and deliver useful, accurate insights instantly.

🛠️ How We Built It

The application was built during hackathon. We used AI Bolt.new to jumpstart our development, generate reusable components, and create a clean architecture that allowed us to rapidly implement features.

Core Features:

  • Upload or capture a photo of a dish or menu item
  • AI analyzes the image to identify ingredients
  • Displays likely allergens, dietary information, and origin of the dish
  • Links to similar recipes and ingredient explanations
  • Interactive exploration of the dish’s cultural and nutritional background

🤖 Development Experience

AI Bolt.new enabled a smooth and problem-free development process. It provided:

  • Instant scaffolding for both frontend and backend
  • Component suggestions for upload interfaces and results display
  • Logic generation for state management and result rendering

This allowed us to focus entirely on the quality of the user experience and the accuracy of the AI analysis, rather than low-level setup or repetitive code.

🧠 What We Learned

Through this project, we learned how to:

  • Integrate AI food recognition APIs into real-time workflows
  • Design for users with very different needs — from allergy safety to culinary curiosity
  • Balance information density with readability and simplicity in the UI
  • Use AI development platforms to drastically reduce time to MVP

We also gained valuable insight into the complexity and ambiguity of visual food recognition, and how context matters when delivering health and dietary information.
