Inspiration
InspirationMath can often feel intimidating, especially when standard online solvers give raw answers without explaining why or how a solution works. We were inspired to build AI Math Helper to bridge the gap between getting homework done and actually understanding the underlying concepts. We wanted to create an interactive tutor experience that makes complex problem-solving accessible, engaging, and stress-free for students of all levels. What it doesAI Math Helper is an interactive educational assistant that guides users through complex mathematical problems step-by-step. Key features include:Step-by-Step Breakdown: Breaks complex equations down into digestible, logical steps with explanations for each transformation.Interactive Explanations: Allows users to ask follow-up questions on specific steps to clarify formulas or rules used.Visual Concepts: Renders clean math syntax and visual representations using LaTeX to make equations easy to read. How we built itFrontend: Built with Next.js and React, leveraging TypeScript for strict type safety and Tailwind CSS for clean, responsive UI components.Backend & Database: Modeled complex mathematical user sessions and saved history using Prisma (.prisma schema definition) and communicated through structured JSON API payloads.Math Rendering & AI Integration: Utilized LaTeX syntax parsing to render clean mathematical formulas dynamically alongside tailored LLM prompts for educational accuracy.Challenges we facedPrompt Engineering for Accuracy: Ensuring the model strictly adheres to mathematical logic without skipping steps or generating hallucinated answers.Type-Safe Data Flow: Structuring JSON API payloads and TypeScript interfaces across Next.js API routes to handle dynamic, multi-step math solutions cleanly.Formatting Complex LaTeX: Parsing and rendering complex math syntax dynamically without breaking responsive Tailwind layouts.Accomplishments that we're proud ofDelivering real-time, accurate step-by-step solutions that read like a human tutor.Architecting a type-safe stack with Next.js, Prisma, and TypeScript that handles complex data flows seamlessly.Creating a clean, intuitive UI using Tailwind CSS that keeps the focus strictly on learning and comprehension. What we learnedEffective techniques for structuring system prompts and strict TypeScript interfaces to handle complex, multi-step LaTeX responses.Strategies for leveraging Prisma schema relationships to efficiently query and display past problem breakdowns.
