🌱 Inspiration
Mental health and journaling apps often reduce emotions to numbers, streaks, or text logs. We wanted to explore a different question:
What if your emotions could grow into something beautiful instead of just being recorded?
Living AI Garden transforms conversations into a living, evolving 3D world. Every meaningful chat plants a flower whose appearance reflects the emotional tone of the conversation. Instead of seeing a timeline of messages, users see the emotional landscape they've cultivated over time.
The project combines AI, procedural 3D graphics, and emotional visualization to create a calming experience that encourages reflection rather than endless scrolling.
🌼 What it does
Living AI Garden is an AI-powered reflective chat experience where every conversation grows a unique garden.
Users chat with The Gardener, an AI companion designed to respond warmly, playfully, and empathetically.
Each conversation:
- is analyzed for emotional tone using AI
- maps one of 27 emotions to a unique flower species
- changes the flower's color and growth
- influences the garden's weather
- permanently becomes part of the user's personal 3D garden
The garden itself evolves over time:
- flowers grow as conversations continue
- new trees, butterflies, and huts unlock as garden energy increases
- day/night cycles and dynamic weather create a living environment
- deleted conversations leave behind memory stones instead of disappearing completely
Rather than deleting memories, the garden acknowledges that experiences—even difficult ones—still shape us.
🛠️ How we built it
We built Living AI Garden using a modern full-stack architecture optimized for interactive AI experiences.
Frontend
- React 19
- TanStack Start
- React Three Fiber
- Three.js
- Tailwind CSS
- Radix UI
Backend
- Cloudflare Workers
- Nitro
- Supabase (Authentication, PostgreSQL, Row Level Security)
AI
- OpenAI GPT models for conversation and emotion classification
- Automatic fallback to Groq and Gemini to improve reliability
3D System
Instead of static assets, many flowers are procedurally generated in React Three Fiber. Every emotion maps to unique visual characteristics, weather effects, and growth states, making each garden feel personal.
We also built systems for:
- persistent flower placement
- dynamic weather transitions
- procedural night skies
- memory preservation
- emotion classification
- AI safety filtering
- cloud deployment on Cloudflare Workers
🚧 Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was making AI feel emotionally meaningful rather than gimmicky.
Some of the technical challenges included:
- Designing an emotion system that consistently maps conversations into meaningful visual representations.
- Building procedural 3D flowers instead of relying entirely on pre-made assets.
- Keeping large React Three Fiber scenes performant across browsers.
- Making multiple LLM providers work seamlessly with automatic failover.
- Persisting a complex interactive 3D scene while allowing users to rearrange flowers and keep those layouts synchronized.
- Creating safety guardrails so sensitive conversations are handled appropriately without disrupting the reflective experience.
Balancing emotional design with technical complexity was far more challenging than building either one independently.
🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're especially proud that Living AI Garden feels like more than just another AI chatbot.
Some highlights include:
- 🌸 Turning conversations into an evolving 3D world instead of a chat history.
- 🤖 Successfully integrating multiple AI providers with automatic failover.
- 🎨 Creating unique procedural flower species representing 27 different emotions.
- 🌦️ Building weather, lighting, and environmental effects driven by emotional state.
- 🪨 Preserving memories through stone markers instead of permanently deleting them.
- ⚡ Deploying the entire application on Cloudflare Workers while maintaining a smooth interactive experience.
Most importantly, we created an experience that encourages reflection and emotional awareness in a visually engaging way.
📚 What we learned
Building Living AI Garden taught us that AI experiences become much more meaningful when paired with thoughtful interaction design.
We learned:
- Visual storytelling can make AI conversations feel more memorable.
- Emotion classification requires careful prompt engineering and fallback logic.
- React Three Fiber can power surprisingly rich interactive worlds in the browser when optimized correctly.
- Reliability matters just as much as intelligence, which is why multi-provider AI support became an important part of the architecture.
- Small design decisions, such as preserving memories instead of deleting them, can significantly change how users emotionally connect with a product.
🌿 What's next for Living AI Garden
Our vision extends far beyond a chat application.
Next, we want to add:
- 🌱 Long-term garden evolution based on months or years of conversations.
- 🐦 Wildlife that appears based on emotional growth and milestones.
- 📖 AI-generated reflection summaries showing emotional patterns over time.
- 👥 Shared gardens where trusted friends or family can visit each other's spaces.
- 🎵 Adaptive ambient music that changes with the garden's mood.
- 🏡 Seasonal events and collectible plants unlocked through personal milestones.
- 📱 Native mobile applications with notifications that encourage mindful check-ins rather than addictive engagement.
- 🧠 More personalized AI that remembers a user's growth while respecting privacy and user control.
Ultimately, we want Living AI Garden to become a peaceful digital space that helps people visualize their emotional journey, one conversation, one flower, and one season at a time.
