Inspiration

The AI Learning Assistant was inspired by the growing need to make online learning more efficient and focused. With vast amounts of information available on the web, learners often get overwhelmed or distracted. This project aims to build a browser extension that uses advanced AI attention mechanisms to dynamically highlight key information, summarize complex topics, and filter distractions in real time — much like having a personal tutor guiding you through any webpage.

What it does

The AI Learning Assistant is a browser extension that uses advanced AI attention mechanisms to help users focus on key information while browsing. It dynamically highlights essential content, summarizes complex topics, filters distractions, and personalizes learning by adapting to users’ interests and pace. It works in real-time, much like a personal AI tutor integrated into everyday web use.

How we built it

We used JavaScript and the Chrome Extensions API to build the extension, integrating Chrome's built-in AI models such as Gemini Nano via APIs like the Prompt API and Summarizer API. The AI processing happens mostly on-device for privacy and speed, with Web Workers ensuring the UI remains smooth during complex AI computations. The UI was designed with accessibility and customization in mind, allowing users to control summarization length and highlight styles.

Challenges we ran into

Integrating high-performance AI models into the browser without impacting performance was challenging. We solved this by using asynchronous processing and Web Workers. Crafting prompts that yield accurate, context-aware summaries took iterative testing. Browser compatibility and maintaining privacy while delivering real-time AI features also required careful design.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully built a privacy-respecting AI assistant that runs complex models on-device, providing real-time content summarization and attention-based highlighting. Users can customize their experience, and the extension maintains responsiveness even during AI processing. We've demonstrated how AI can transform content consumption directly in the browser.

What we learned

We gained deep insights into on-device AI integration with modern browser APIs, advanced prompt engineering for summary accuracy, and techniques to balance AI computation with user experience. We also learned best practices in maintaining privacy while delivering powerful AI functionalities.

What's next for AI LEARNING ASSISTANT

We plan to add multimodal inputs like image and audio understanding to provide smarter, richer content assistance. We aim to expand language support with real-time translation and add user feedback loops to improve model relevance. Additionally, we want to optimize offline capabilities and explore AI-assisted quizzes and flashcards to boost active learning.
