AI Language Tutor

Inspiration

Being a first generation immigrant to Germany, there was a huge language barricade. German is usually required. Being a student with limited finances, and finding a good course, a good teacher and a language partner is really difficult. So, I build this for all the new language learners to learn German which acts not only as a teacher but also as a speaking buddy.

What it does

It has an interactive speaking session to practice and talk to the tutor in German while the AI tutor provides feedback and corrects Grammatical errors and pronunciation. In addition to that it has flashcard to help learners learn new words as well as a Grammar section to practice Grammar.

How we built it

The tech stack consists of-

Frontend UI : Flutter Cross-platform framework providing a responsive, dark-mode user interface.

Backend API : FastAPI (Python) High-performance asynchronous REST API handling business logic and AI orchestration.

Database & Auth : Supabase Handles user authentication, database management, and persistent user data.

AI Engine / LLM : Groq API Integration Powers ultra-low-latency real-time AI quiz generation, dynamic flashcards, and language corrections.

Challenges we ran into

As a student, I faced the issue of making the app as low cost as possible. So, I developed this app using free trier. Had the backend server running in render. User Authentication built in Supabase free trier.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I feel good to develop a product of my own. This is the first time I have participated in a hackathon and built a full stack mobile app - with frontend and backend.

What we learned

This experience was a huge milestone in the learning curve. I learned a lot throughout the process especially how to come up with different solutions that makes me think that nothing is impossible. There is always a solution, one just has to look from it at a different angle.
