Inspiration

We are passionate about using our technical skills to make the world a better place. Given the omnipresence of AI in our current society, we wanted to create a way for users to make educated decisions on their own AI use.

What it does

Our extension automatically tracks AI energy and water consumption as one searches the web or uses ChatGPT. The user can set a goal for a maximum amount of water/energy they wish to consume over a day, week, or month.

How we built it

This was constructed using Node, Javascript, CSS, and HTML, with energy and water usage calculations derived from research papers and articles on the subject.

Challenges we ran into

Google uses randomized class names and ids for all of its elements, so finding the ai overview text proved to be tricky. Additionally, AI companies' obstinance in giving up any information about power consumption, water usage, or even model size resulted in difficulty computing the exact energy usage.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The entire project, but particularly the AI overview detection and our statistical model.

What we learned

Neither of us had ever made an extension before, so we learned much about the process.

What's next for AI Impact Tracker

We would like to expand the scope of what is able to be tracked by the extension and refine existing capabilities to be more robust. In addition, we would like to extend compatibility to non-Chromium based browsers.
