"## Inspiration

A hairstyle change can feel exciting, but it is also hard to reverse. People often save inspiration photos, ask friends for opinions, or imagine a new color or haircut without knowing how it will look on their own face.

We built AIHairStyleChanger.AI to make that decision more visual, personal, and practical. Instead of guessing before a salon visit, users can upload a clear portrait and explore hairstyle and color ideas on their own photo.

What it does

AIHairStyleChanger.AI is an AI-powered virtual hairstyle try-on tool.

Users can:

  • Upload a portrait and preview hairstyle changes on their own photo
  • Explore more than 100 hairstyle options for different looks, lengths, and textures
  • Try natural shades, bold colors, highlights, and root-to-tip gradient colors
  • Compare before-and-after results before making a real haircut or coloring decision
  • Upload a reference hairstyle image for more specific inspiration
  • Use an optional AI styling advisor to receive personalized hairstyle ideas and preview packages
  • Save generated looks in their history and return to them later
  • Use localized country and language pages for a more relevant experience

The product is designed to help people answer simple but important questions: “What haircut will look good on me?”, “Would I look good with bangs?”, “What would I look like bald?”, or “Should I try blonde hair?”

How I built it

The product is built as a full-stack web application with React, TypeScript, Vite, Node.js, Express, tRPC, MySQL, Drizzle ORM, and Tailwind CSS.

The frontend provides a responsive photo upload and hairstyle-selection workspace with hairstyle categories, hair-color controls, gradients, reference-image support, generation history, and a separate AI styling-advisor experience.

On the backend, we built a secure generation workflow with image ownership checks, content safety moderation, credits, guest trials, authenticated users, generation recovery, payment handling, and persistent history. The app also includes a Stripe-powered credit system, transactional email support, an admin dashboard, and a multilingual SSR and SEO architecture.

We also built dedicated SEO tool pages for search intents such as bald filters, bangs filters, blonde hair filters, haircut recommendations, and country-specific hairstyle simulators.

Challenges I ran into

The biggest challenge was making the experience feel useful without making unrealistic promises. A hairstyle preview should inspire confidence, but it cannot guarantee exactly how a real haircut, hair color, lighting condition, or salon result will look.

Another challenge was preserving a user’s identity while changing only the requested hair attributes. We had to design the generation workflow so users could test a new look while still recognizing themselves in the result.

We also worked through mobile layout constraints, multilingual routes, SSR and hydration consistency, SEO-friendly country directories, long-running generation recovery, safe image handling, and an interface that remains simple even as more advanced features are added.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • Built a complete AI hairstyle try-on experience instead of a single demo screen
  • Created a responsive workspace for hairstyles, colors, gradients, and reference-image inspiration
  • Added an AI styling advisor with personalized recommendations and preview options
  • Implemented generation history, retries, deletion controls, credits, subscriptions, and an admin dashboard
  • Added multilingual, country-specific site architecture with SSR, canonical URLs, hreflang support, and sitemap coverage
  • Optimized performance by keeping large content and page-specific functionality out of the initial homepage bundle
  • Created focused SEO tools for bangs, bald looks, blonde hair, and hairstyle recommendation searches
  • Built the product to work well on both desktop and mobile

What I learned

I learned that a strong AI product is not just about generating an image. It also depends on clear user expectations, safe handling of personal photos, thoughtful loading and recovery states, useful controls, and an interface that helps users make a real decision.

I also learned that localized SEO requires more than translation. Different audiences search with different questions, vocabulary, and goals, so the product needs dedicated country pages and content rather than one generic global page.

What's next for AIHairStyleChanger.AI

Next, we want to make recommendations even more useful by expanding hairstyle collections, giving users more precise controls for hair texture and color placement, and improving the comparison experience.

We also plan to continue expanding localized content, country-specific tool pages, and practical guidance that helps users turn a virtual preview into a confident real-world salon decision."
