Inspiration
Securing grant funding is critical for non-profits and researchers, yet traditional grant writing is time-consuming, administrative, and opaque. High-impact initiatives often miss out on funding simply because small teams lack dedicated resources to navigate complex RFPs and submission rules. We created Strong Start to democratize access to funding by building an intelligent workspace that automates grant discovery, structural drafting, and compliance checks.
What it does
Strong Start is an end-to-end AI grant-writing workspace that streamlines the full proposal lifecycle. It parses RFPs to score project eligibility, generates structured narrative sections tailored to funder priorities, and reconciles narrative goals with budget line items. Additionally, it evaluates active drafts against funder scoring rubrics in real time to catch compliance gaps before final submission.
How we built it
We built the frontend workspace with React, Vite, and Figma-designed UI layouts, using Vitest and browser smoke testing for frontend validation. The backend engine is powered by an asynchronous FastAPI server, with Pytest managing full backend test coverage. We structured LLM orchestration pipelines to break RFPs into modular components, managing our workflow via GitHub CLI across phased
Challenges we ran into
Enforcing strict word count limits and formatting rules on LLM outputs required building custom schema validation layers above our FastAPI endpoints. We also faced initial CORS and socket timeout bottlenecks between the Vite frontend and FastAPI backend during long-running generation streams. Finally, normalizing disparate funder scoring rubrics into a single engine required extensive schema mapping. Accomplishments that we're proud of We built a fully functional end-to-end workspace that generates polished, rubric-aligned grant proposals from raw project inputs in seconds. We maintained rigorous code quality by establishing high test coverage with Pytest and Vitest across both application layers. Most importantly, we transformed complex grant development into an intuitive canvas that lowers barriers for non-technical teams.

What we learned
Decoupling grant generation into modular, specialized prompts yields far higher output quality than relying on single monolithic prompts. We also learned that disciplined Git branch hygiene and CLI-driven PR workflows prevent major friction during fast-paced integration phases. Above all, we realized human-in-the-loop editing is essential for preserving authentic domain context alongside AI drafting.
What's next for AI Grant Agent - Strong Start
We plan to integrate live API scrapers for real-time funding databases like Grants.gov and regional foundation portals. We are also building WebSocket-enabled real-time collaboration features so multi-disciplinary teams can co-draft applications seamlessly. Finally, we aim to implement custom embedding models for tone adaptation and expand one-click exports into .docx and .pdf formats.
