Inspiration
The spark for RaktSetu* came from the voice of Radhika Sawh, a genetic counselor living with **beta thalassemia major. Her words _“It is very scary for people like me who depend on blood transfusions to hear about blood shortages.” Grounded us in a painful truth: finding safe, timely blood in India is still uncertain, and often, life-threatening.
We discovered Blood Warriors, an NGO making real change through advocacy, awareness, and community care.
Their work inspired us to ask: How can we use tech to amplify empathy, ensure verified impact, and empower both donors and patients?
What it does
RaktSetu is an AI-assisted blood and aid platform that bridges donors, patients, NGOs, and hospitals, ensuring that help isn't just promised, but delivered.
Key Features:
- Personalized blood donation alerts based on donor health, history, and blood type.
- AI-powered behavioral nudges to boost donor retention and build long-term, compassionate donation habits.
- Gamified dashboards for donors and volunteers with real-time impact tracking (e.g., lives impacted, donation streaks, leaderboard).
- Document-verified crowdfunding for thalassemia and rare-disease patients, ensuring authenticity and transparency.
- Real-time SOS bridge that connects emergency requests to nearby verified donors through geo-tagged alerts and smart routing.
- NGO and hospital network integration for centralized request verification and streamlined donation logistics.
- Donor-friendly medical records and history log, making it easier to manage eligibility and follow-up reminders.
- Community engagement and recognition badges for sustained involvement.
Every drop, every rupee, every alert is traceable, ethical, and human-first.
** How We Built It**
We engineered RaktSetu as a modular, AI-first platform combining smart infrastructure with accessible design to address real-world donor-patient challenges. Here’s a breakdown of how we brought it to life:
* Frontend **
React.js + Tailwind CSS: For building a fast, mobile-responsive UI optimized for accessibility and modular component design.
IndexedDB + PWA Support: Enables offline usage in rural/low-bandwidth areas.
Interactive Dashboards: Built with Plotly/Chart.js for real-time blood availability, donor trends, and campaign tracking.
** Backend **
Flask (Python): Lightweight backend for routing, API handling, and ML model integration.
Firebase Cloud Functions: For real-time triggers like donor notifications, fraud checks, and reward point tracking.
Role-based access control: Custom flows for Donors, Patients, NGOs, Hospitals, and Moderators.
** Databases **
Firebase Realtime DB + Firestore: Handles dynamic data like live donation requests, chat messages, and history logs.
SQLite: Local-first storage for rural edge deployment with periodic sync logic.
Blockchain Ledger (Polygon): Immutable logging of donations and fund transfers (planned in post-hackathon phase).
** AI & Machine Learning **
We used a combination of supervised models, ranking systems, and NLP pipelines to power the core intelligence:
Use Case Algorithm / Framework Donor Matching Engine - LightGBM Ranker with Pairwise Loss Donation Habit Prediction - K-Means Clustering for behavioral grouping Fraud Detection - Scikit-learn Classifier trained on document/metadata signals Sentiment & Mood Detection - AWS Comprehend for emotion-aware suggestions Document Parsing & Classification - spaCy for custom NER & doc scoring FAQ Assistant - LangChain + FAISS powered Retrieval-Augmented Generation bot Motivational Nudges - GPT-4 for story generation and personalized messages
** APIs & Integration**
Google Maps API: Geo-aware donor-patient matching and heatmaps.
Assembly AI: Speech-to-text for accessibility in donation flows.
Twilio / WhatsApp: Real-time notifications and emergency alerts.
AWS Textract + Comprehend: OCR and NLP-based document analysis.
OpenAI API: For donor story generation, emotional appeal texts, and blog creation.
Razorpay API: Secure fund handling for verified patient donations.
IPFS / Polygon Minting (NFTs): For impact story badges (in roadmap).
Verification & Trust Layer OCR Pipeline: For PAN cards, blood test results, and NGO certifications.
Manual Review Workflow: Admin/NGO panel for flagging duplicate or suspicious cases.
AI-based Fraud Confidence Scoring: Evaluates doc authenticity using metadata and content similarity.
Challenges we ran into
- Verified crowdfunding: Ensuring medical documents are legitimate while maintaining user privacy and dignity was a constant balance of automation and human oversight.
- Retaining donors: Tackling donation drop-off rates required thoughtful use of gamification, behavioral nudges, and education to promote long-term commitment.
- Inclusion: Designing a user experience that works for both tech-savvy urban donors and less digitally literate caregivers in rural areas challenged our assumptions and design choices.
- Trust-building: In a domain plagued by misinformation and fraud, building a system that is transparent, ethical, and verified was non-negotiable—and deeply technical.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Crafted a detailed, research-backed concept addressing real-time blood emergencies with a user-first approach.
- Designed India’s first donor-focused, gamified dashboard concept centered around measurable, verified impact.
- Built a verified aid framework for thalassemia patients aligned with Blood Warriors’ mission of advocacy and care.
- Prioritized empathy, ethics, and scale from day one—ensuring our solution isn’t just technically sound, but truly human-centered.
What we learned
- Technology doesn't drive change, people do. Human-first design is what makes innovation matter.
- Earning trust through verified impact is tough, but it's the only path to lasting relevance.
- When tech amplifies real stories, action follows. Emotion isn't a feature, it's the catalyst.
- Conversations with patients and caregivers reshaped our approach more than any whitepaper ever could.
What's next for PulseChain
- Partnering with Blood Warriors and other NGOs for real-world pilot deployments.
- Integrating with hospital blood banks for inventory transparency.
- Launching a progressive web app for low-bandwidth access in rural areas.
- Creating awareness modules for schools and colleges to build a culture of regular donation.
- Moving toward blockchain-based donation and aid tracking for immutable transparency.
