Inspiration
It's more now important than ever to be able to distinguish reliable sources from bogus news in an age where there is widespread misinformation. Inspired by the track "Reimagining the Future of Education," I developed a tool that would enable researchers, teachers, and students to navigate the online ecosystem confidently. Our goal in combining technology and education is to produce a generation of knowledgeable people who can evaluate news sources critically and become proficient in media literacy.
What it does
AI Fake News Detector is a web-based platform developed to test the credibility of news articles by either uploading text files or article URLs or even just inputting text. Advanced machine learning algorithms are then run on this content to provide users with instant feedback as to whether the article is likely to be real or fake. The tool is an educational device to help in the development of critical thinking and discernment for users while being flooded by information.
How I built it
AI Fake News Detector was developed with Flask, Python, and machine learning libraries. A trained Linear Support Vector Classifier (SVC) model, which was created using a dataset of actual and false news articles, is the basis for the main functionality. TfidfVectorizer was used to extract text features. With the help of HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap, an intuitive online interface was constructed. The Flask-built backend processes user inputs, interprets the text, and outputs the prediction.
Challenges I ran into
- Data Quality: One of the biggest challenges was making sure the dataset was complete and a representation of news that occurs in the real world.
- Model Accuracy: It took a great deal of fine-tuning and validation to get the model balanced to reduce false positives and false negatives.
- Web scraping: Handling different website formats while extracting clear and meaningful text from URLs presented technical problems.
- User Experience: It required considerable planning and iteration to create an interface that is both aesthetically pleasing and intuitive while accommodating various user inputs such as files, text, and URLs.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
• Integrated a machine learning model with a web application for real-time feedback. • A smooth and accessible interface so that it is user-friendly for all, technical as well as non-technical. • Design a tool capable of not only detecting fake news but also, as an educational resource, promoting media literacy and encouraging critical thinking. • Application designing for handling various kinds of input efficiently with an enormous load of data.
What I learned
I came to an understanding of how integral clean, representative data is to the accuracy of machine learning models. To make our interface more user-friendly, user input was necessary. Also, it showed the benefits of joining knowledge in web development, data science, and education. Ultimately, I realized continuous development was necessary in considering user input and new developments in the disinformation space.
What's next for AI Fake News Detector
I strive to further increase the accuracy through diversified datasets and develop the capability for supporting multiple languages. Development of educational modules on media literacy, making it a Chrome Extension for your browser, a mobile app for anywhere access, and integration with any educational platform, shall also be a step taken soon. This would make it easy, impactful, and user-friendly and extend it to the critical assessment of news and further informed media consumption.
