FIDOShield AI is an intelligent, hardware-assisted passwordless authentication system designed to provide secure and adaptive digital identity protection. The project combines the FIDO2/WebAuthn authentication standard with Artificial Intelligence to address the security limitations of traditional password-based authentication.
Traditional passwords are vulnerable to phishing, credential theft, password reuse, brute-force attacks, and data breaches. FIDOShield AI eliminates the need to depend on passwords by using a dedicated hardware authenticator that securely performs cryptographic authentication. The authenticator can be implemented using an ESP32-S3 microcontroller, a secure cryptographic element such as the ATECC608B, USB Type-C connectivity, a physical user-presence button, and status indicators. During registration, the authenticator generates a cryptographic key pair. The private key is protected within the authenticator, while the corresponding public key is registered with the authentication server. During login, the server generates a unique challenge, which is securely processed by the authenticator to prove possession of the registered credential.
The main innovation of the project is the integration of an AI-based risk assessment layer with FIDO authentication. While FIDO provides strong cryptographic proof of the user's registered authenticator, the AI system evaluates the context and behavior associated with each authentication attempt. It can analyze parameters such as login time, login frequency, failed authentication attempts, device changes, location changes, browser characteristics, network information, and previous authentication patterns. Based on these factors, the AI model generates a dynamic risk score and classifies the authentication attempt as low, medium, or high risk.
For example, a user authenticating from a previously recognized device at a normal time with normal behavior may receive a low-risk score and be granted access immediately. However, if authentication occurs from a new device at an unusual time after multiple failed attempts or significant changes in the user's normal behavior, the AI can identify the attempt as suspicious. Depending on the risk level, the system can allow access, request additional verification, or restrict access.
The proposed system therefore provides two complementary security layers: FIDO establishes cryptographic identity, while AI evaluates the trustworthiness of the authentication context. This makes the system more adaptive than conventional password-based authentication and more intelligent than a basic FIDO authentication system alone.
The project will include a custom hardware authenticator, authentication server, AI risk-analysis engine, and web-based security dashboard. The dashboard can display authentication status, FIDO verification results, AI risk scores, detected anomalies, and the final access decision in real time. Hardware indicators such as LEDs and a push button can also provide physical feedback during the authentication process.
FIDOShield AI can be applied to banking systems, corporate applications, healthcare portals, educational platforms, government services, cloud platforms, industrial systems, and other applications requiring strong identity protection. The project demonstrates how hardware security, passwordless authentication, embedded systems, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity can be combined to create a practical next-generation authentication solution.
The ultimate goal of FIDOShield AI is to move beyond simply asking whether a user has the correct credentials. Instead, the system verifies the user's cryptographic identity and intelligently evaluates whether the overall authentication attempt can be trusted, providing secure, passwordless, adaptive, and real-world cybersecurity.
