Inspiration

Faculty members receive many academic emails, including circulars, meeting announcements, event updates, and deadline reminders. Finding important information in lengthy emails can take time. We wanted to simplify this process by building an AI Email Summarizer Agent specifically for faculty.

What it does

The AI Email Summarizer Agent helps faculty manage academic emails through a centralized dashboard. It summarizes lengthy emails, identifies important messages, prioritizes communications, tracks deadlines, and extracts action items. It also provides suggested reply drafts and allows users to filter emails and track task completion.

How we built it

We built the application using React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS for the frontend, FastAPI with Python for the backend, and SQLite for data storage. The application includes a dashboard, inbox, email details, priority indicators, deadline tracking, and action-item management. The current demonstration uses 15 fictional academic emails and deterministic mock AI outputs to demonstrate the workflow.

Challenges we ran into

One challenge was organizing email information so that important details, deadlines, and action items are easy to identify. We also worked on handling deadlines correctly, maintaining consistency across different pages, and making the interface simple to navigate.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We developed a working application that brings email summaries, priority indicators, deadlines, and action items into one dashboard. We are proud of building an organized interface that demonstrates how academic email management can become more efficient.

What we learned

We learned how to integrate a React frontend with a FastAPI backend, manage application data using SQLite, and design a workflow around email summaries and task tracking. We also learned the importance of handling dates carefully and making extracted information easy to review.

What's next for AI Email Summarizer Agent

We plan to integrate and test live LLM-powered email processing, complete Gmail integration, improve the accuracy of deadline and action-item extraction, and explore reminders and daily summaries. We also aim to strengthen authentication and data privacy before supporting real faculty inboxes.
