Inspiration

The rise of AI-generated deepfakes has made it increasingly difficult to trust what we see and hear online. From misinformation to fraud and identity misuse, deepfakes pose real threats. We wanted to build a system that empowers people to verify media authenticity quickly and accurately.

What it does

Our system analyzes images, videos, and audio clips to determine whether they are real or AI-generated. It detects:

Facial inconsistencies

Lip-sync mismatches

Lighting and shadow errors

Frame-level artifacts

Synthetic voice patterns

Metadata manipulation

Finally, it provides a real/fake probability score and highlights suspicious regions.

How we built it

We combined multiple detection pipelines:

CNN- and Transformer-based models for visual anomaly detection

Spectrogram and frequency analysis for detecting voice cloning

Frame-by-frame temporal consistency checks using RNNs

Metadata extraction modules for verifying file integrity

A web dashboard for uploading media and viewing results

Technologies used: Python, OpenCV, TensorFlow/PyTorch, Librosa, FastAPI, and a simple UI powered by React/Flask.

Challenges we ran into

Identifying deepfakes in low-quality or heavily compressed videos

Handling large video files efficiently

Balancing accuracy vs. processing time

Training models on diverse deepfake datasets

Distinguishing between post-processing edits and actual AI manipulation

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built a working prototype capable of detecting common deepfake patterns

Integrated video, image, and audio analysis in a single tool

Achieved strong accuracy across multiple test samples

Designed a clean and easy-to-use interface

Learned real-world challenges involved in forensics and AI verification

What we learned

How modern deepfake generation techniques work internally

Best practices for training ML models on visual and audio data

Importance of multimodal analysis (not relying on one model alone)

How metadata plays a key role in forensics

The complexity of real-world deepfake detection and the need for continuous model updates

What's next for AI Deep Fake Analysis

Adding real-time video stream detection

Expanding to detect fully synthetic human voices with higher accuracy

Building a browser extension for quick authenticity checks

Improving our model using larger and more recent deepfake datasets

Implementing blockchain-based media authenticity certification

Developing an API for integration with law enforcement, media platforms, and cybersecurity tools
