AI Conflict Mediation: Our Journey

Inspiration

The inspiration for AI Conflict Mediation stems from my personal experience with Nonviolent Communication (NVC). I have witnessed firsthand how a structured process of mediation can transform conflicts into opportunities for deeper understanding and connection. This profound impact motivated me to explore ways to make such processes more accessible. I see tremendous potential in AI to democratize this structured approach, allowing more people to experience the benefits of empathetic communication.

What It Does

AI Conflict Mediation guides users through a structured process to express their feelings, identify their needs, and listen empathetically to others. Using AI-driven insights, the app provides real-time feedback and suggestions to facilitate productive and understanding-focused dialogues. It helps users navigate conflicts effectively, turning disputes into opportunities for growth and connection.

How We Built It

• Research: We started with research on the possibilities of Vertex AI Agents and how that could fit our ambition.
• Design: We choose to use one agent in the default (no-code) interface of Vertex AI Agents.
• Development: Using an iterative process we developed an agent that help users articulate their feelings and needs while also providing real-time feedback to foster empathy and understanding.
• Testing: We conducted testing with diverse user groups to refine the app’s functionality and ensure it effectively facilitated constructive dialogues.

Challenges We Ran Into

The journey was not without its challenges. Integrating AI with the nuanced principles of NVC required meticulous fine-tuning to ensure the technology could accurately interpret and respond to human emotions. Ensuring the app's responses were both empathetic and constructive demanded constant iteration and user feedback. Connecting to a frontend with a no-code approach to our Agent didnt work out, the Integrations that were given didnt work out or were not available for Agents.

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

We are particularly proud of successfully integrating NVC principles with Vertex AI technology to create a tool that genuinely facilitates empathetic communication. The heartwarming feedback from initial user testing, where users reported feeling understood and supported by the app, has been incredibly rewarding.

What We Learned

Throughout this project, we gained invaluable insights into the intricacies of both AI and NVC. We do see that AI will not replace the presence of a real human when it comes to empathy, yet we do see that a structured process of empathy and mediation can be shared and applied with AI.

What's Next for AI Conflict Mediation

Looking ahead, we plan to continue refining AI Conflict Mediation based on user feedback and evolving AI capabilities. We aim to build integrations to frontend website and platforms like Telegram. Our ultimate goal is to make empathetic communication accessible to as many people as possible, fostering a more understanding and harmonious world.
