💡 Inspiration
We watched our classmates crumble under academic pressure — and quietly turn to AI for the answers. Not for help. For the answers.
Teachers couldn't tell what was AI-written. Schools panicked and started banning AI entirely. But banning it meant students lost a genuinely powerful tool. Allowing it freely meant real learning died.
We're students ourselves. We lived this problem. And we decided to build something better — not a ban, not blind access, but a smarter middle ground.
🔧 What is Refyn?
Refyn is an ethical AI learning platform that redirects students from shortcuts toward real understanding. Its core technology, the AI Prompt Integrity Engine (APIE), evaluates the intent behind every student query — not just the keywords.
If a student asks "Solve this equation for me" → blocked.
If a student asks "Can you explain how to solve this?" → guided through learning.
The platform includes:
- AI Prompt Integrity Engine – Intent-based classifier, not keyword filtering
- Ethical Adaptation Framework – Schools customize their own AI boundaries
- AI-Generated Learning Paths – Adaptive, personalized to each student
- Live Quiz System – Real-time engagement with instant feedback
- Student Dashboard – Tracks progress, habits, and understanding depth
- Teacher Dashboard – Surfaces learning gaps, flags misuse, reduces workload
- Admin Dashboard – Institution-wide compliance, analytics, and policy control
- Offline Mode – Lightweight model runs without a continuous internet connection
📊 Validation
We didn't just build this — we tested it.
- Surveyed 180 students and 40 teachers across two schools to shape the core design
- Trained APIE on ~10,000 labeled academic prompts → achieved 92% classification accuracy
- Ran a 6-week pilot with Grade 7 students using Refyn for homework and projects
Pilot results:
- 📈 42% improvement in conceptual understanding
- 📉 30% reduction in direct copying / plagiarism
- 💬 60% increase in meaningful student-teacher engagement
- ⏱️ 50% decrease in teacher workload related to AI oversight
- ✅ 90% of teachers said students learned more responsibly
🛠️ How We Built It
Refyn has evolved through three development stages:
- Concept Design – Wireframes and UX flows built in Figma
- Alpha Version – Functional Python prototype with basic intent filters
- Beta Version – Full dashboards, analytics engine, and optimized APIE
We are now building Refyn v1.0, which includes school-customizable AI policies and editable training datasets. The stack is cloud-hosted with cross-platform compatibility across Windows, macOS, Linux, and Debian environments.
🚧 Challenges We Faced
- Training a classifier to understand intent rather than surface-level keywords was significantly harder than basic content filtering — context, tone, and sentence structure all had to be factored in
- Building an offline mode that maintained accuracy without a live API connection required a lighter, locally-runnable model
- Coordinating a student team across different schools and schedules while simultaneously building, testing, and pitching
- Convincing schools to pilot an AI governance tool when most institutions were still deciding whether to allow AI at all
🌍 Impact & Vision
Refyn isn't just a product — it's infrastructure for the future of AI in education.
At the individual level, students build genuine understanding and integrity. Teachers regain trust in technology. Schools can confidently adopt AI without sacrificing academic honesty.
At scale, Refyn becomes the default AI governance layer for classrooms worldwide — every AI interaction in a school, passing through an ethical framework first.
Market context: India alone has 1.5M+ schools. The global EdTech market exceeds $300B. No platform currently governs AI usage at scale. Refyn defines this new category: Ethical AI Infrastructure for Learning.
