Inspiration

“In a world… where assignments pile up, hands ache, and deadlines loom in the dark…”

We’ve all been there — scribbling pages at 2 AM, trying to meet a submission deadline with sore hands and sleepy eyes. Assignments aren’t just mentally exhausting, they’re physically tedious. We imagined a world where writing could be effortless and uniquely yours — without losing the charm of your handwriting. That’s when AssignMe was born — to end the monotony and let students focus on what really matters: learning.

What it does

AssignMe is an AI-powered web application that transforms typed assignment content into fully realistic, customizable handwritten documents — in your style, your ink, and even your own handwriting.

Key features: Upload any PDF/image assignment. Customize fonts, spacing, ink color, and background. Generate ultra-realistic handwritten pages — even mimic your own handwriting. AI-powered Q&A for smart extraction and formatting. Live preview and downloadable outputs in image or PDF format. Open source and accessible — no sign-up required.

How I built it

Frontend HTML, CSS, JavaScript for a lightweight, responsive UI HTML2Canvas + jsPDF for rendering and downloading handwritten documents Canvas drawing for realistic font rendering

Backend FontForge Dockerized Backend: Converts user handwriting samples into custom fonts (TTF/OTF/WOFF) Google Gemini AI Service: Enhances text understanding and extraction for PDFs/images APIs are integrated using Axios for seamless communication

Infrastructure & Tools Docker for backend services GitHub for version control MIT license and open-source model

Challenges I ran into

Handwriting realism: Simulating real pen strokes, letter randomness, and spacing took intense tuning. Font generation: Capturing user handwriting and turning it into high-quality fonts with FontForge was a complex pipeline. Cross-browser compatibility: Ensuring the canvas, file processing, and downloads worked smoothly across major browsers. AI integration: Using Gemini API required handling edge cases like incomplete questions, low-quality images, and mixed-language input. Keeping it lightweight: Balancing functionality and performance in a fully front-end app was a constant battle.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Developed a complete assignment automation tool with zero backend dependency for the core experience. Successfully created a usable interface for capturing and generating your own handwriting as a font. Integrated AI for real-time question understanding and intelligent formatting. Launched a production-ready site — assignme.live — that’s already solving real student problems. Built a scalable backend architecture with Docker for font rendering and AI pipelines.

What I learned

Advanced JavaScript rendering with canvas, image capture, and PDF generation. Practical font development with FontForge, including glyph mapping and kerning adjustments. Containerization using Docker to deploy scalable backend services. AI integration with Google Gemini — from API authentication to NLP processing. Real-world UI/UX considerations: building for students with minimal instructions or tech knowledge.

What's next for Assignme

Assignment templates: Pre-defined lined paper, margin rules, and school-specific formats. Voice-to-handwriting: Speak your assignment and generate handwritten pages. Collaboration tools: Group assignments with live editing and tracking. Smart scheduler: Plan and distribute assignments with auto-deadline reminders. Offline support: Enable usage in low-connectivity environments using service workers. Marketplace for fonts: Share/sell custom handwriting styles and notebook themes.
