Creating short-form content from podcasts, interviews, webinars, and long videos is still a time-consuming process. Finding the best moments, trimming them, adding captions, and formatting them for social media can take hours.
I built AI Clip Cutter to automate that workflow. The goal is simple: turn one long video into multiple engaging, ready-to-post short clips with minimal manual editing.
What it does
AI Clip Cutter analyzes long-form videos and automatically identifies the most promising moments for short-form content.
It can:
Transcribe long videos using AI. Detect and rank potential viral moments. Analyze hooks, context, emotion, and content density. Explain why a particular segment was selected. Convert clips into 9:16 vertical videos for platforms like Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and TikTok. Add captions and prepare clips for publishing. Let creators review and select the clips they actually want.
Instead of spending hours searching through a podcast for good moments, creators can let AI do the initial discovery and editing work.
How I built it
AI Clip Cutter was built as a modern SaaS application combining AI, video processing, transcription, and web technologies.
The core workflow is:
Upload Video → Transcription → AI Analysis → Best Moment Detection → Clip Generation → Captions → Ready-to-Post Video
The system analyzes the transcript and video content to identify sections that can work independently as short-form content. The selected segments are then processed into vertical clips with captions.
I focused heavily on making the workflow automated while still giving creators control over the final clips.
Challenges I ran into
One of the biggest challenges was that finding a good clip is much harder than simply cutting a video into smaller pieces.
A technically valid clip can still be boring, lack context, or have a weak opening. I had to think about how AI could evaluate things like:
Is the opening strong enough to grab attention? Does the clip make sense without the rest of the conversation? Does it contain a useful insight, emotional moment, or interesting statement? Is the clip long enough to provide value but short enough to maintain attention?
Another challenge was video processing. Large videos require significant processing time, storage, and computational resources, so performance, reliability, and cost all became important engineering considerations.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I'm proud that I turned an idea into a working SaaS product that can take a long-form video and transform it into multiple short-form content opportunities.
The part I'm most proud of is the AI-driven clip selection and scoring system. Instead of randomly cutting the video, AI Clip Cutter tries to understand why a moment could be valuable and provides reasoning behind its selection.
I also built the product with a practical creator workflow in mind, so the output isn't just an AI-generated suggestion—it is a usable, captioned vertical clip ready for social platforms.
What I learned
Building AI Clip Cutter taught me that creating an AI product is not just about connecting an LLM to an application.
The difficult part is building the complete product workflow around the AI.
I learned a lot about:
AI-powered video and content processing. Prompt engineering and structured AI outputs. Transcription and large-text processing. Automated video generation. SaaS architecture and backend processing. Managing long-running and resource-intensive jobs. Product UX for AI-assisted workflows. Balancing AI automation with user control. Building and launching a real product instead of just a prototype.
Most importantly, I learned that AI should reduce complexity for users rather than simply add more AI features.
What's next for AI Clip Cutter
AI Clip Cutter is just the beginning.
Next, I want to make the platform smarter at understanding what makes content engaging for different audiences and platforms.
Some of the areas I'm exploring include:
Better AI-powered viral moment detection. Platform-specific clip optimization. More advanced caption styles and customization. Automated B-roll and visual enhancement. AI-generated titles, descriptions, and hooks. Direct publishing to social platforms. Improved support for podcasts, webinars, courses, and interviews. Analytics to learn which clips actually perform well. More automation from long-form video → multiple social posts.
The long-term vision is to make AI Clip Cutter a complete content repurposing platform, helping creators turn one piece of long-form content into an entire week's worth of short-form content.
