Use Case Title:: Using AI (Bard and ChatGPT) to work on assignments
Description:: As a student in an online university, the evolution of AI has become an important tool that I leverage to do assignments. I sometimes give it my responses and request the AI to modify the response. It also helps with grammatical error correction and makes my writing more academic; sometimes, it does the assignment from scratch, particularly when clueless. So, I modify the response or gain ideas on how I approach the question.
Tutorial for Use and Best Practices:: Initiating the Conversation with ChatGPT Type into ChatGPT: “Making use of the information below, please modify this response to be more accurate and sound more academic for a [student level e.g. Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior student].” “Or, making use of the information below, provide a response to this question following APA format, and limit the word count to [Number of Words].” Best Practices: It is advisable to provide additional information if possible. Reviewing and Asking Follow-Up Questions Review the generated response. Follow-up questions like [“Why do you think ‘this’ is a better alternative to ‘this’ other option]. Best Practices: You can always tell more by making adjustments concerning the tone usage e.g. “Use first-person voice to rephrase the above response”. It is advisable to provide background details - so that the response can be tailored after them
Impacts on Learning:: Positive Impacts: It has given me a better understanding of some of my assignments and has helped with my sentence construction. It has also helped with my typing prowess, as a simple prompt such as “correct spelling errors” can help reduce the time taken to correct errors manually. Limitations: When AI is solely relied on to solve assignments by syudents, it results in a detestable attitude - laziness. As a result, lecturers take extra effort to scrutinize assignment solutions carefully to detect the direct use of AI. Using both Bard AI and ChatGPT has helped me so much to turn in assignments that sound professional. It has also helped build my confidence in how I approach some assignments. I no longer feel intimidated by some assignments that seems unapproachable before now, when I am lost for ideas.
Limitations and Ethical Considerations: It is necessary for students to know that there should be a limit to the involvement of AI in their work. Students should not use AI as an excuse to be unserious with their coursework and should try to learn as much as possible. AI should be seen as a tool that helps, not a tool that does all the work.
