About Smart build: AI Civil Site Safety & Smart Construction Assistant
Inspiration
As a Civil Engineering student, I wanted to create a simple digital solution to address common construction challenges, especially site safety awareness and concrete quantity estimation. This inspired me to build Smart build.
What It Does
Smart build provides a digital safety checklist, identifies missing safety measures, calculates a safety-gap score, and estimates concrete volume with an optional waste allowance. It aims to make construction planning easier and improve safety awareness.
How We Built It
I developed this beginner-friendly web prototype using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. HTML structures the application, CSS makes it responsive and user-friendly, and JavaScript handles checklist scoring and concrete calculations.
The concrete volume is calculated using:
[ V = L \times W \times D ]
where (L) is length, (W) is width, and (D) is depth.
Challenges We Faced
The main challenges were keeping the interface simple, making calculations accurate for valid inputs, and presenting safety information clearly. I addressed these by creating separate sections for safety checks and quantity estimation.
What I Learned
This project helped me connect Civil Engineering concepts with web development, improve my problem-solving skills, and understand how technology can support construction workflows.
Future Scope
Future versions could include Hindi language support, photo-based hazard reporting, and AI-powered safety recommendations. Smart build is currently an educational prototype, not a certified safety inspection tool.
