What it does## Inspiration
Many students and early-career learners are confused about which career path to choose, what skills they are missing, and how to prepare for internships or entry-level roles. This problem is especially common for students targeting data analytics, data science, business analyst, software development, or GenAI roles.
AI Career Navigator was built to solve this problem by giving students personalized career guidance using Google Gemini.
What it does
AI Career Navigator analyzes a student's profile, including degree, skills, projects, career goal, target role, and job or internship description.
It generates:
- Skill readiness score
- Matched and missing skills
- Personalized AI career report
- Job description match analysis
- Resume improvement suggestions
- LinkedIn and GitHub improvement suggestions
- 30-day roadmap tracker
- Interview preparation questions
- Downloadable career report
How we built it
We built the application using Python and Streamlit for the web interface. Google Gemini API is used to generate personalized career guidance and job description match analysis. Pandas is used for organizing skill gap data, and Matplotlib is used to visualize the skill readiness score.
The app takes user inputs, calculates a basic skill readiness score based on the selected role, and then uses Gemini to generate detailed career insights. The output is displayed in multiple tabs: Score, AI Report, Skill Gap, JD Match, Roadmap Tracker, and Download Report.
Challenges we faced
One challenge was making the project more than a basic AI chatbot. We wanted it to be structured, practical, and useful for real students. Another challenge was designing effective prompts for Gemini so that the output is specific and actionable.
We also had to manage the Gemini API key safely using a .env file and .gitignore, so the private key does not get uploaded to GitHub.
What we learned
We learned how to integrate Google Gemini API into a real-world web application, how to build a structured AI workflow using Streamlit, how to manage environment variables securely, and how to design a product around a real student problem.
Impact
AI Career Navigator helps students understand their career readiness, identify skill gaps, compare their profile with job descriptions, and follow a clear preparation roadmap. It can be useful for students preparing for internships, apprenticeships, and entry-level roles.
