Inspiration
Individuals and small businesses want to live sustainably but often struggle to measure their impact. Carbon footprint calculators exist, but they are either too technical or too generic. We wanted to create a personalized AI-powered assistant that helps users track, understand, and reduce their carbon emissions in a simple, actionable way.
⚡ What it does
Analyzes user inputs (electricity bills, transport habits, shopping receipts).
Uses AI to estimate carbon emissions in key categories (energy, transport, food, shopping).
Suggests practical, personalized actions (e.g., “Switch one commute per week to biking → save 15kg CO₂/year”).
Generates progress reports and eco-scores that make sustainability visible and motivating.
🛠️ How we built it
Cursor & Lovable → to rapidly prototype the AI workflows.
OpenAI/GPT APIs → to parse bills, receipts, and habits into structured carbon data.
Streamlit (Python) or Next.js (JavaScript) → lightweight frontend for input + dashboards.
Public carbon datasets/APIs (e.g., UK government conversion factors, ClimateAPI) to anchor AI outputs in real data.
Deployed on Vercel/Streamlit Cloud for instant access.
🚧 Challenges we ran into
Converting unstructured data (bills, receipts) into accurate carbon equivalents.
Balancing accuracy vs simplicity so users are not overwhelmed.
Integrating reliable carbon factor datasets with AI reasoning.
Time limits — building a demo-ready prototype in under 2 days.
🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a working prototype that turns real-world inputs into carbon insights.
Created an AI-driven suggestion engine that feels personal, not generic.
Designed an experience that makes sustainability accessible, engaging, and measurable.
📚 What we learned
How AI can be combined with open climate datasets for practical sustainability solutions.
The importance of UX simplicity in driving sustainable behavior change.
How modern AI tools (Cursor, Lovable) speed up prototyping and allow us to focus on the core idea.
🚀 What’s next for AI Carbon Footprint Tracker
Add automatic data import (from bank transactions, ride-hailing apps, or smart meters).
Enable community challenges (compare footprints with friends, gamified eco-goals).
Partner with climate organizations and local governments for verified impact offsets.
Expand from individual tracking → team and small business dashboards.
