Inspiration
Manual attendance takes time and can lead to errors, proxy attendance, and difficulty in maintaining records. We wanted to build a simple and automated solution that can identify students using their faces and record attendance digitally.
Our project, AI-Based Attendance System Using Face Recognition, uses computer vision and face recognition to automate the attendance process.
What It Does
The system captures a student's face through a camera and compares it with registered student faces.
When a recognized student is detected:
- The student's identity is verified.
- Attendance is automatically marked.
- The date and time of attendance are recorded.
- Attendance records can be stored digitally for future use.
This reduces manual work and makes attendance faster and more organized.
How We Built It
We built the project using:
- Python – Main programming language
- OpenCV – Camera access and image processing
- Face Recognition – Face detection and recognition
- Database – To store student and attendance records
- GUI – To provide a simple interface for registration and attendance
The basic workflow is:
Student Registration → Face Capture → Face Detection → Feature Extraction → Face Recognition → Student Identification → Attendance Marked → Database Storage
Challenges We Faced
One of the main challenges was handling different lighting conditions and face positions during camera capture. We also had to understand how face recognition works and how to connect the recognition process with attendance records.
Another challenge was designing the system so that it remains simple and easy to use for students and teachers.
What We Learned
Through this project, we learned about:
- Computer vision and image processing
- Face detection and recognition
- Python programming
- Database integration
- Building a real-world AI-based application
- Teamwork and problem solving
Future Improvements
In the future, the system can be improved by adding:
- Student and teacher login
- Attendance reports
- Excel/PDF report generation
- Email notifications
- Improved recognition under different lighting conditions
- Anti-proxy/liveness detection
- Cloud-based attendance management
Conclusion
Our project demonstrates how AI and computer vision can be used to automate a common academic task. The system aims to make attendance faster, more organized, and less dependent on manual record keeping.
