Inspiration

AI Appliance Helper was inspired by my own experiences as a homeowner.

I often struggled to understand correct settings and sometimes to resolve small issues myself related to home appliances like my Samsung washer, freezer, and even my Honda civic car 2012 dashboard. I had to spend hours and search manuals, Internet search, or YouTube videos just to solve simple problems.

I thought: “Why can’t I just point my phone at it and get instant help? which saves a valuable amount of time I can use for other productive work”

That idea led to AI Appliance Helper project that I choose for this OpenAI build week hackathon.

What it does

AI Appliance Helper is an AI-powered assistant that helps users understand the settings or fix appliances very quickly instead of spending hours to get right support for a simple problem.

Users point their camera at an appliance or upload a photo. The AI explains controls, answers questions, and gives step-by-step guidance. It also suggests when to contact a technician.

How we built it

React, TypeScript, Vite, Node.js, and Express, using GPT-5.6 vision through the OpenAI Responses API for image analysis and contextual troubleshooting chat. OpenAI Codex was used to review the completed project, identify defects and security gaps, improve reliability and accessibility and deployment to Render.

OpenAI’s multimodal models analyze images and generate helpful responses. The interface is simple and easy to use.

Challenges we ran into

It was challenging to keep explanations simple to understand but accurate.

We also had to ensure the AI gives safe advice and knows when to recommend professional help.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We built a solution based on a real problem.

The app turns a simple photo into useful, personalized guidance, making appliance support easier for everyone and save a significant amount of time.

What we learned

We learned that using AI models in a right way solve real problems in simple ways efficiently and help to speed up our work and that allows to use our time productively .

We also learned how to combine AI vision with practical guidance while keeping the experience safe and easy to use.

What's next for AI Appliance Helper

My goal is to make AI Appliance Helper the easiest way for anyone to understand and troubleshoot appliances, regardless of their age, technical knowledge, or language.

Future enhancements planning to include natural voice conversations so users can simply speak to the assistant instead of typing. The assistant will understand and respond in the user’s preferred language, making expert guidance accessible to people around the world.

The ultimate goal is to create an AI assistant that anyone can point at a device, ask questions naturally in any language, and receive clear, accurate, and easy to understand guidance making expert help available to everyone, everywhere.
