the future of sports media
ahta - the future of sports media
Our thesis is that the next ESPN will be built in a web3 world and built from the ground up with sports creators.
The state of affairs.
Currently, most sports content is created and consumed through the giant media networks. These media networks are closed off to >99% of people in the sports world.
Yet, there is a growing demand and surge in people creating content outside of these networks and the appetite of the regular sports fan is changing drastically.
The boom of the creator economy has brought a new wave of sports creators. Anyone that wants to build an audience in the sports world is able to do so through podcasts, short-form videos, blogs, tweets, and much more. However, it's not that simple.
New players are entering the space.
Former and current athletes, such as Draymond Green and JJ Redick, have started their own shows. Boutique sports podcast networks are popping up led by former employees at these top networks.
Brands are constantly looking for new and improved methods to reach consumers instead of running ads on television networks.
Less people are watching televised sports and are instead consuming their sports content through other outlets such as Twitter, TikTok, and YouTube.
It's just the same thing repackaged.
Yet, significant problems still exist.
While sports content consumption is shifting, it is still being created for web2 social platforms. These platforms have significant pitfalls. Lack of ownership of data. Lack of transparency. Lack of interoperability. Limited monetization capabilities. I could go on.
We are also still missing a dedicated sports social platform for fans to consume all types of sports content. This is why many still resort to turning on large centralized networks such as ESPN or Fox Sports.
New boutique media networks are not open to everyone. While it has been great to watch these podcast networks thrive over the past couple years, they are still closed off to >99% of people.
Introducing ahta.
We thought to ourselves, "What if there was something else?" A new kind of sports media platform.
- One that is available for anyone to enter from superstar LeBron James in LA to cricket worshipper Sheetal in Bangalore to Eagles fanatic Joe from Philly and everyone in between.
- One that offers a dedicated sports platform for anyone to create and consume.
- One that provides unique ways to monetize one's following and content exactly how they choose.
- One that helps smaller creators get started and connect with brands rather than simply blocking them out.
- One that is transparent and not guided by the interests of a small few but rather the interests of the sports fans themselves.
The platform.
The core of ahta is built on top of Lens Protocol - a decentralized social graph that helps developers build web3 social applications.
ahta is a unique interface for Lens Protocol that will only serve sports content to you. Currently, sports content displayed on ahta will be only displayed if the user has created that content through the ahta platform. Using our lens protocol interface, people can create posts, modify their profile, read articles, watch videos, like, mirror, and much more. We have also added a social tipping element where people are able to send crypto to the other person's wallet if they vibe with their content.
In addition, we feature most of the supported collect modules offered in Lens. When someone collects a post, they get a QR code that they can show to someone to verify that they have truly collected this post. For example, let's say that you are Chethan's Mild Wings and you come to ahta, create a post, set the collect module info to be 100 people max at 5 MATIC. If they would like to offer IRL free mild wings for everyone that collected, all they would have to do is scan the QR code that the person shows them and instantly verify.
ahta is also aiming to be an aggregator of the best sports NFT projects in the world. Whether they be on Ethereum, Polygon, Flow, Solana, or any chain, we want to be the home where people are actively discovering new ways to create, engage, and own sports collectibles. We have used a combination of the OpenSea API as well as the Alchemy NFT API to curate the collection and NFT metadata needed to render the collectibles.
ahta also features a home page which displays latest articles, videos, podcasts, and more. In the future, we are looking to turn this into a new kind of sports newspaper, where sports content on our homepage will feature high-quality content from top creators on ahta, live scores, athlete profiles, and much more.
