About the Project: AgroScan
What Inspired Us
Agriculture is the main source of livelihood for millions, but crop diseases and pests still cause major losses every year—especially for small farmers. Many of them don't have quick access to experts or labs to help identify what's wrong with their crops. We wanted to create something simple but powerful to help them take action early and protect their harvests.
How We Built It
We created AgroScan, a simple web app that lets anyone upload a photo of a plant leaf. Behind the scenes, our app uses artificial intelligence (AI) to detect whether the plant is healthy or has signs of a disease or pest. It gives instant results, along with helpful tips.
We used:
- A trained AI model that can recognize common plant diseases
- A fast and lightweight backend to process images
- A clean and easy-to-use frontend for quick uploads and results
What We Learned
While building AgroScan, we learned:
- How AI can be used to solve real problems in agriculture
- How important simple design is when your users may not be tech-savvy
- The value of accurate, helpful feedback—especially in situations where time matters
Challenges We Faced
Some challenges we ran into:
- Making the app work well with images from different types of cameras
- Keeping the AI model lightweight so it runs fast on all devices
- Ensuring the predictions are helpful but don't replace expert advice
Why It Matters
AgroScan gives farmers a quick way to understand what might be affecting their crops. It’s designed to be useful even in remote areas where expert help is hard to find. We believe tools like this can help make agriculture smarter, more efficient, and more sustainable.
