Inspiration
AgroRithm-Octopus was inspired by the multitasking intelligence of the octopus — agile, adaptable, and connected. In many rural African regions, farmers and herders face daily challenges like land conflict, water scarcity, and limited connectivity. We imagined an AI-powered “octopus” that could reach into multiple problem areas at once — predicting conflict, supporting sustainable farming, and connecting communities even without internet access. This project extends AgroRithm’s vision of using AI, IoT, and blockchain for peace, food security, and sustainability.
What it does
AgroRithm-Octopus is a smart, offline-first platform that helps farmers and herders prevent conflict, manage livestock, and earn blockchain rewards for sustainability actions.
It:
🧠 Predicts conflict risks using NDVI, weather, and livestock movement data.
🌍 Works offline using BLE mesh, GPS, and SMS/USSD sync.
💬 Provides a multilingual AI voice assistant (Hausa, Pidgin, Yoruba, English, French).
💰 Uses Hedera blockchain to issue PEACE Tokens and record eco-friendly actions.
📱 Runs as a web app (PWA) sync seamlessly with IoT devices.
Together, these features create a “digital ecosystem” that supports peacebuilding, sustainable farming, and climate-smart decision-making.
How we built it
Frontend: React Progressive Web App (PWA) with TailwindCSS and offline map caching.
Backend: Firebase for real-time data storage, Flask API for AI data endpoints.
AI & ML: TinyLLaMA chat via Ollama for local intelligence; NDVI and weather data for conflict prediction.
Blockchain: Hedera SDK for token minting (PEACE Token) and NFT-based livestock IDs.
IoT Layer: BLE mesh + GPS trackers for geofencing and real-time alerts via Twilio SMS.
Challenges we ran into
Running Tinyllama chat on Telegram bot Balancing AI model performance with lightweight deployment on rural devices.
Managing BLE mesh communication in remote zones with limited power.
Integrating Hedera token logic with Firebase authentication for rewards.
Building an interface that remains fast and usable under poor network conditions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully connected IoT livestock tracking with blockchain-based incentives.
Designed an intuitive PWA dashboard that works on both web and mobile.
Implemented real-time conflict risk and environmental prediction using IoT weather, satellite NDVI data.
Unified multiple technologies — AI, IoT, blockchain, and voice — into one functional system for social good.
What we learned
Building for rural Africa means designing for resilience first, not bandwidth.
Offline AI and voice tools like TinyLLaMA, Vosk, and Coqui make inclusive tech possible.
Community-driven design (languages, SMS support, rewards) is key to real-world adoption.
Blockchain isn’t just for finance — it can build trust and transparency in social systems.
What's next for AgroRithm- Octopus
Introduce micro-lending and staking features using Hedera for green financing.
Partner with local cooperatives and telcos to deploy IoT and BLE networks at scale.
Release an open-source toolkit so developers can build their own “Agro tentacles” for local problems
