AgroGuard: Our Journey So Far The idea for AgroGuard came from watching farmers in our community struggle year after year with losses they couldn’t prevent. Some lost their crops to sudden droughts, others to diseases that went undetected until it was too late. We realized the problem wasn’t always about hard work it was about not having access to the right tools at the right time. That inspired us to build a simple but powerful system that gives farmers early warnings, even in remote areas. We started by talking to farmers directly to understand their needs. We learned that they didn’t just want apps they needed something offline, affordable, and easy to use. That’s when we decided to combine IoT sensors with AI and GSM technology. We built a prototype using an Arduino, moisture sensors, flame sensors, and a GSM module to send real-time SMS alerts. We also added an LCD and buzzer to show and sound alerts even without a phone. Building the disease detection model was another learning curve. We trained it using open datasets and refined it to recognize early signs of common crop infections. We even added a feature for farmers to snap and upload pictures for instant analysis. The biggest challenge was balancing cost and functionality. Many devices on the market are too expensive for smallholder farmers. We had to carefully choose affordable components and build something reliable but still cost-effective. Power was also a challenge so we made the system solar-powered. Throughout the journey, we’ve learned that innovation doesn’t have to be complex it just has to be relevant. AgroGuard was built by listening, testing, failing, improving, and staying close to the people it’s meant to serve.
