Inspiration
Farmers and small processors in Africa work hard to grow crops like cocoa, coffee, and cashews, but they lose money because they sell them as cheap, raw materials. They cannot sell high-value processed goods because international buyers demand official proof of quality, and traditional lab testing is too expensive. We were inspired to build AgroGuard AI to put a quality lab directly into every processor’s pocket using a basic smartphone. Our goal is to help local businesses prove their quality, skip cheap raw sales, and deliver products with higher value.
What it does
AgroGuard AI turns a simple smartphone camera into an automated crop quality scanner:
Instant Quality Scanning: The user snaps a photo of processed crops, and the AI immediately checks for defects, size, and grade.
Official Digital Certificates: It instantly creates an export-ready Quality Certificate with trace details that international buyers accept.
Fair Price Suggestion: It gives processors direct price estimates based on their verified grade, helping them negotiate higher prices with buyers.
How we built it
We designed AgroGuard AI with a mobile-first, simple architecture:
Mobile App: Built using Flutter so it works smoothly on low-cost smartphones.
AI Analysis Engine: Powered by multimodal AI models (Gemini / Claude) to analyze crop photos and spot physical defects.
Local Machine Learning: Integrated TensorFlow Lite (TFLite) to run quick scans even when internet connection is poor.
Location & Traceability: Used PostGIS databases to tag exact farm locations and batch history for full supply chain tracking.
Challenges we ran into
Bad Lighting and Poor Cameras: Low-end smartphone cameras take blurry or dark pictures, making it hard for the AI to spot tiny defects at first.
Offline Operation: Many small processors work in remote areas with bad internet, so making the AI work without continuous cloud access was tricky.
Building Buyer Trust: Designing a digital certificate that international buyers would trust just as much as paper certificates from expensive labs.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Working Mobile Prototype: Built a functional app that scans crops and generates a complete Quality Certificate in less than 5 seconds.
High AI Accuracy: Trained our visual AI model to accurately detect real-world crop defects like mold, discoloration, and uneven sizing.
Solving a Real Economic Problem: Successfully created a tool that directly addresses the core problem—helping African businesses deliver high-value products instead of cheap raw materials.
What we learned
Simple UI is Key: Workers in the field need very large buttons, clean visuals, and minimal text to use the app fast without long training.
Traceability Matters: Buyers do not just want to know if the crop is good; they want exact location data showing where and when it was processed.
Local Context First: AI models trained on ideal lab photos fail in real life; training with real field photos is essential for accuracy.
What's next for AgroGuard AI
Offline AI Upgrades: Improve local TFLite models so full image scanning works completely offline without any internet connection.
More Crop Support: Expand our AI training from cocoa and coffee to include tea, grain, and spices.
Direct Buyer Marketplace: Connect certified processors directly to global buyers inside the app so they can sell their high-value goods faster.
