Inspiration
Farmers in India get squeezed by middlemen at almost every step price manipulation, no transparency on where produce actually goes, and FPOs (Farmer Producer Organizations) struggling to prove authenticity or get fair deals. We wanted to fix that with something farmers could actually trust
What it does
AgroChain lets FPOs track produce right from the farm to the final buyer, with every transaction recorded on-chain. Buyers can verify origin and pricing history instantly, farmers get proof of fair dealing, and middlemen can't quietly manipulate numbers anymore
How we built it
We went with a Turborepo monorepo setup, Tailwind for styling, MongoDB Atlas for off-chain data, and deployed the frontend on Vercel with the backend on Render. For the blockchain layer, we integrated with Shardeum's EVM testnet (deployed to mainnet later) to handle the on-chain transaction recording
Challenges we ran into
Integrating the EVM testnet smoothly with our backend also took a lot of trial and error, especially around transaction confirmations and syncing on-chain data with MongoDB.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud we shipped a real, working blockchain integration (not just a mockup) and deployed it to Shardeum mainnet.
What we learned
Always have a backup plan for your demo frontend failures happen, and being ready to pivot live is a skill in itself. We also learned a lot about working with EVM testnets in a real product context, not just tutorials, and how important it is to keep off-chain and on-chain data in sync without adding too much latency.
What's next for agroTrade
We want to onboard real FPOs and run a pilot with actual farmers, add more robust price-tracking analytics, and eventually build out a mobile-first version since most farmers will access this through phones, not laptops. Long-term, we're looking at expanding beyond just tracking into full farm-to-buyer payment settlement on-chain.
