Inspiration

About 80% of people throw out perfectly good food because they misjudge its freshness or the time it takes to go bad. That is especially true regarding hyper-perishable items like greens, fruit, mushrooms, or bread. The USDA estimates that the total annual cost of wasted food is $240 billion or $1,886 per household (Forbes), impacting the entire supply chain. Over the last decades, there has been almost no innovation happening in food storage and few solutions have been developed to help people reduce household waste.

What it does

AGROAI is a complete food waste reduction system that helps people store, track, and use the food they buy in an effort to reduce waste. Through a mobile app, users can keep track of food in each container and know ahead of time when their food items are going bad. The role of the app is to help build accountability in a delightful way: positive nudges to take action, easy-to-process solutions, access to educational content tailored to user behavior, and a waste tracker to measure impact.

How we built it

We used various technologies and APIs in building the app, we implemented AI for the food ordering part of the app, so customers can directly buy products that are available at the shortest distance from them and ensure their freshness. We utilized Oracle ERP historical data on supply and demand and have placed an AI layer over ERP to curate historical data.

Challenges we ran into

Connecting with farmers is one of our major issues, since technology is still developing in the rural areas of our country is a challenging job to have smooth operations where there might be network fluctuations, there is also very less technological literacy in these areas hence we created an app that was light on the memory storage and minimum graphics so that people with even a decade old device could access the app.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Four of us have really worked hard as a team and come up with this innovative solution, we have learned a lot of skills to contribute to the making of this project.

What we learned

This project would definitely not have been completed without teamwork, we learned that having a quality team with whom you have great chemistry helps you achieve great results, All the skills we learned for this app from HTML to Figma, from PYTHON to SQL it all took a lot of effort and constant dedication.

What's next for AGROAI

We want to scale AGROAI by introducing chips into retail chains so that customers can get an alert when there is food that is about to expire and buy it for a cheaper price, this also helps the retail outlets to minimize their losses.
