AgroShield — Smart Crop Insurance for Indian Farmers
Inspiration
Agriculture is the backbone of India, but farmers face significant financial uncertainty due to unpredictable weather, droughts, and floods. Traditional crop insurance processes can involve lengthy claim procedures, field inspections, and delays in compensation. These challenges can leave farmers vulnerable when they need support the most.
We built AgroShield with the vision of making crop insurance smarter, faster, more transparent, and accessible. By combining satellite-based crop monitoring with cloud technology, we aim to reduce dependence on manual assessments and help farmers receive timely compensation when predefined crop-damage conditions are met.
What it does
AgroShield is a smart, satellite-powered crop insurance platform designed for Indian farmers. It uses remote sensing and automated insurance rules to monitor crop health and support faster claim processing.
Key features include:
- Weekly crop monitoring: Uses Sentinel-2 satellite imagery and Google Earth Engine to monitor agricultural fields.
- NDVI-based crop health analysis: Calculates the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to assess vegetation health and identify unusual changes over time.
- Drought and flood risk detection: Analyzes crop-health trends and relevant environmental indicators to identify potential weather-related crop damage.
- Automated payout triggers: Uses predefined insurance conditions to initiate the payout workflow when eligible damage thresholds are met.
- Cloud-based infrastructure: Uses Google Cloud and Firebase to support backend services, data management, and application functionality.
- Farmer-friendly mobile experience: Uses Flutter to provide an accessible interface for farmers to view crop health, receive alerts, and track insurance claims.
Our goal is to reduce paperwork, minimize delays, and make crop insurance more data-driven and transparent.
How we built it
AgroShield combines satellite imagery, geospatial analysis, cloud infrastructure, and mobile application development.
- Google Earth Engine: Processes satellite imagery and performs geospatial analysis over agricultural areas.
- Sentinel-2: Provides multispectral satellite imagery used to monitor vegetation and agricultural land.
- NDVI analysis: Uses near-infrared and red reflectance to estimate vegetation greenness and track changes in crop health over time.
- Google Cloud: Provides the cloud infrastructure for running backend processing and coordinating system components.
- Firebase: Supports application services such as authentication, data storage, and synchronization, depending on the configured services.
- Flutter: Powers the mobile interface through which farmers can access crop-monitoring information and insurance-related updates.
- Automated insurance rules: Connects crop and environmental indicators with predefined policy conditions to support consistent claim evaluation and payout initiation.
The intended workflow is to monitor crops regularly, identify significant changes, evaluate them against insurance conditions, and initiate eligible claims automatically. Reliable implementation requires accounting for cloud cover, missing satellite observations, crop type, growth stage, and independent evidence of drought or flooding.
Challenges we ran into
Developing AgroShield involves several important technical and practical challenges:
- Interpreting satellite data: Vegetation indices can be affected by cloud cover, image quality, seasonal changes, and differences between crop types.
- Distinguishing drought from flood damage: A decline in NDVI may indicate crop stress, but it does not independently establish the cause of the damage.
- Reliable monitoring: Satellite observations are not always available at the desired weekly frequency, so the system needs strategies for missing or low-quality data.
- Designing fair payout rules: Insurance thresholds must be carefully calibrated to avoid false claims, missed damage, or unfair outcomes for farmers.
- Integrating multiple technologies: Coordinating geospatial processing, cloud services, a database, and a mobile application requires reliable data flow and clear interfaces.
- Building farmer trust: Automated decisions must be transparent, explainable, and supported by clear claim-status information.
These challenges highlight the importance of combining remote sensing with reliable validation, robust engineering, and farmer-centered design.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Developed a clear vision for making crop insurance more proactive and technology-driven.
- Designed a workflow that connects satellite-based crop monitoring with insurance eligibility and automated payout initiation.
- Brought together Google Earth Engine, Sentinel-2, NDVI analysis, Google Cloud, Firebase, and Flutter in a unified project architecture.
- Focused on reducing dependence on physical field inspections and improving the transparency of crop-damage assessment.
- Created a foundation that can be extended to multiple crops, agricultural regions, and weather-related risks across India.
AgroShield's central accomplishment is its approach: transforming satellite observations into actionable information for agricultural risk management and insurance.
What we learned
Through AgroShield, we explored how satellite remote sensing and cloud technologies can address real-world agricultural problems.
We learned that NDVI is a useful indicator of vegetation health, but reliable crop-damage assessment requires more than a single index or observation. Historical comparisons, weather data, crop calendars, and flood-related indicators can improve the quality of risk detection.
We also learned the importance of designing reliable data pipelines, integrating multiple cloud services, defining clear insurance rules, and making complex technology understandable to end users.
Most importantly, we recognized that automation is valuable only when it is accurate, fair, transparent, and designed around the needs of farmers.
What's next for AgroShield
Our next goal is to turn AgroShield into a reliable, field-ready crop insurance platform.
- Improve detection accuracy: Incorporate rainfall data, weather forecasts, soil moisture, and flood-related indicators alongside NDVI.
- Expand crop coverage: Develop crop-specific monitoring baselines for different regions, seasons, and growth stages.
- Introduce historical analysis: Compare current satellite observations with historical crop-health patterns to identify abnormal changes.
- Build a complete farmer dashboard: Provide crop-health maps, risk alerts, policy information, claim progress, and payout status.
- Strengthen automated claims: Add policy validation, auditable decision logs, fraud prevention, and safeguards for uncertain or incomplete satellite observations.
- Integrate payment systems: Explore secure payout integrations with appropriate insurance partners and payment providers.
- Pilot with real farms: Validate detection thresholds and claim workflows using field observations and historical agricultural data.
- Scale across India: Support additional regions, local languages, crops, and insurance schemes.
Our long-term vision is to make AgroShield a scalable, transparent, and data-driven crop insurance ecosystem that helps protect farmers' livelihoods and strengthens agricultural resilience across India.
